Good evening, and Happy New Year!

Earlier this week, a fair amount of my friends who run large instagrams have been getting their interactions nearly sliced in 1/2. Instagram, as a late christmas present, decided to release a new post algorithm. This algorithm is by far the worst I've seen yet performance wise on my account. I've had to ask my followers, for the first time ever, to turn on post notifications. In order to get even a puny amount of likes/comments on my posts.

What's different about the algorithm?
Instagram started changing their algorithm years ago. Most people didn't notice until they starting taking out chronologically ordered posts from your feed. There have been multiple little tweaks since then, but earlier this week a BIG one came in. My posts, along with several other people's posts, have been considerably lacking in engagements. Apparently what this algorithm does is show your new post to an extremely small % of your followers. If this small % of your followers do not interact with your post, it is basically hidden from your other followers. However, If your post does well with this small % of followers, a larger % of your followers will see this post in their feed. My likes/views have went down 90%, and I've been losing followers.

I guess this is an informational thread & a cry for help.
Let me know if anyone has been seeing similar events happening on your page.

if this is true this explains a lot

It has actually always been like this since April 2016 when the algo changed. In terms of showing it to a small %, and then showing it to a larger % if it does well. However, they must have tweaked these numbers even more in the last week to kill our pages, because now engagement is very dead on a lot of pages.

It could be they are really trying to crack down on ads we post in an effort to re-claim their lost advertising revenue. Since most people won't like or comment on an ad, they will drop like a rock in the first 10 minutes.

I made a pretty in depth thread about this back in January 2018.

That has been known for a while and it seems like there hasn't been any noticeable MAJOR changes I would say in my humble opinion. I'm still keeping my ears to the ground in the industry and trying to analyze any distinct changes.

There were rumours of Instagram testing a "horizontal feed", but those were just tests.

I am pretty sure it's true because I have huge drop on engagement.

For what i experienced is engagement for 'regular' account was drop so great, i mean regular is like personal account with small amount of 'close friends', and nowadays only really true close friend will do comments, and likes doesn't affect a lot for increasing engagement algorithm. And for pages account will be affected badly, because only 'die hard' niche-fans will stay do comments, the others will only pass the post, not even give a double tap. And now IG is really to many ads, it's like 3:1 ratio, 3 normal post then 1 sponsored ad, this is really bad, it's like IG run out of money, and I don' really enjoy exploring my my personal accounts timeline because it's way too much ads.

instagram Algorithm is pretty hard now days especially with bot's However it has a lot of potential more than past

Yes what you say is absolutly true and
the past week was so f*king bad, engagement droped from 47% to 20% i barely get 2K and 20 comments (before this update my post get from 5K to 30K likes and comments from 100 to 1K comments) and i almost give-up on the account because i thought instagram hit the account with shadowban !
But, The past 3 days my account back to track thankfully just by doing basic things that every instagram influencer should do
1 - post when my followers are active for the maximum engagement for my post to get in the explorer page
2 - post what my followers likes, by analysing my posts and pick the best performing one and keep posting the same kind of this content
3 - use long-tail keywords and i have seen huge improuvement by doing this

Whether this is true or not, which I'm not completely sure, that theory has been around for I would say years. It's definitely not a thing of their latest update.

Or it is simply due to the holidays. The same thing happens every year during this time. People spend time with their families. Let’s give it another week to see if the engagement does not correct itself.

I haven’t seen that much difference in the last days...

I notice engagement drop but mostly on business / commercial profiles and accounts that not have good content.. Nice looking girls for example i think no changes. Anyway instagram is getting worse and thats it, if you do follow-unfollow all you get is trash quality followers no matter how good your filters are and targeting, and ads show more and more..

I'm getting dope engagement rates with f/uf for over a year now. Maybe you are doing something wrong buddy

This is old news mate

Hi,
I´m experiencing exactly the same that is66c described in his post.
Since Dec 24th my engagement has dropped by 90%. Up until Dec 23rd I´ve had about 6k likes and 150 comments per post on my 130k account. Reached dropped from around 110.000 to 20.000 and impressions from 150.000 to 27.000, so not really surprising that the engagement is that low.
My account is usually organically growing about 10k followers a month and is not botted in any way.
I´ve done a new hashtag research using ritetag and changed some hashatgs for the last 3 posts, but still the same. Content quality is still the same as before and I´m posting once a day, at about the same time, photo or video+photo in the feed and a video in the stories.
Honestly, this is really frustrating... Any idea what to do except from keep posting consistantly and hope for the best?
Thx!

Ive also saw a noticeable drop in engagements as well. There was purge of ban accounts on Xmas too. Seems like eventually only ads will drive engagements up

That is what I was wondering I have 5k followers and my posts reach likes by 100 or 150 only

In my experience: NEVER USE AD'S. If you use them one time only they never will put your reach up again. Basic CRM over here. If you spent money they make you spent money more. Stick to the standards, engagement and reach will go up again. Patience is key.
