Instagram user not found

I'm trying to get an Instagram username that doesn't exist but when I try to change mine is says "sorry a user with that name already exists" if I search and mention the name I want it says user not found.

Does anyone know how long it takes for it to be available? Presumably it was taken and the persons changed or deleted it? I've been waiting for months now.

If the name was banned then it wont be available. Probably what has been going on.
