I've been seeing a lot of users suggesting the shoutout method rather than the usual follow/unfollow method to gain followers. I have built up an account to the mid 30k range and I'm wondering how fast you can grow by using shoutouts.

Follow/unfollow gets you more followers but they are more inactive than those you get with shoutouts. Shoutouts are also more expensive so you weigh the pros and cons.

Makes sense! In your opinion, do you believe more followers is more important to more engagement in terms of overall growth?

Do you use a marketplace to find accounts willing to give you shoutouts? If so, which one? And how much did the 1M shoutout cost you!

No, saw big profile on the Instagram and contact it. 70 euro for 4 shootouts (my persuasion skills did good job - well okay.. not that good, she was a fucking 15 year old fangirl).

More followers doesn't mean higher engagement. I have an ig account that has 20% engagement on all my posts consistently and there are larger instagram accounts that have lesser engagement ratios like 2-5% so no.

In my experience, shout outs are cool and effective, but only if used wisely.

Honestly, expectations are way too high when purchasing shout outs; people believe that if they get one shout out from an account that has 500k - 1M followers that their account is going to go viral overnight with thousands and thousands of followers and interactions. Unfortunately, that isn't always the case.

The key is to purchase more than one shout out from multiple accounts and have them sent out at random intervals; if you have the person spamming their IG timeline with shout outs, it will just turn people off.

Lastly, the only thing the follow/unfollow method does is inflate your numbers...Shout outs are the better route to go.

I have also learned that on Instagram, much like on Twitter, popular hashtags + many likes gets you more engagement on your posts than anything..

Well there is no reason to choose, you can (and should) do both, as well as getting power likes to help you reach the explore page.

Follow/unfollow is great for boosting the amount of followers you have, as well as boosting easy engagement (likes) if you have good targeting. Make sure you are targeting users who have proven to engage.

Shoutouts / power likes helps you get extremely valuable followers who will like and comment on your posts a lot more.

Doing just one method is leaving followers/money on the table.

As has been said before, the followers you get from shoutouts are much more active and interested in your content. 50 new followers from a shout out could be the equivalent to 1000 new followers from follow/unfollow, you can't really easily compare them to each other.

I would have to say shout out based in my experience. It also depends on the niche though.

The most important thing about shoutouts is what the actual post is, how the caption is worded, and what the audience of the account doing the shoutout is.

For example, if you get a shoutout post of a pic of your dog with caption "Go follow @fluffy_the_dog" posted on a 5 million follower mens fashion account, you can expect like 100 followers.

On the other hand though, I have gotten like 10k followers very well crafted non-spammy shoutout posts on targeted accounts with only a million followers. That being said though, I use my best OC viral video for those types of things, so unless you have some mindblowing content don't expect anything close to that.

Yea but still you pay good amount of money and the conversion ratio is quite low I would suggest you use power editor instead and get target audience which is much better as 500/18000 is bad.
