Yeah, I also can't believe they didn't implement something like this. It would've been easier for everyone + they could make bank from it.

They will remove them for good.
The reason is simple - money. They know they are better off without having likes displayed.
 
I think this is a good move by Instagram and maybe some people will not like it and are angry about it but slowly they will get used to it. But I am still able to like the posts:)
