Otherwise Tik Tok will unquestionably become the new mobile social networking king in 3 years.

Instagram implementing Reels is not enough to stop Tik Tok. For the past few months, I've been dabbling with Tik Tok in my spare time. I've been absolutely blown away by the platform. I posted one video to Tik Tok on my personal account (which had zero followers), and that one video ended up getting me 690 followers, 80k views, and 14.7k likes. That's insane considering all I used to promote the video was 4 hashtags. The reach you can obtain on Tik Tok is substantially better than the reach you can obtain on Instagram. That's an issue for Instagram.

However, Tik Tok isn't for everybody. Tik Tok is very influencer-focused, and it's not a great platform for brands or for people you know in real life (watching your friends create Tik Toks is cringy). Still, Tik Tok could change that.

Tik Tok's For You Page is miles better than Instagram's Explore Tab, and Tik Tok is much more likely to reward quality content opposed to Instagram. Despite Tik Tok recently announcing their plans to allow users to buy views with their in-app currency, Coins, Tik Tok is still significantly less pay-to-play than Instagram. There's a lot of paid content on Instagram (because there's a lot of money to be made on Instagram), but since there is significantly less paid content on Tik Tok, that makes the app much more addicting and attractive to users. People don't want to see ads, and Tik Tok is creating a better user experience by highlighting their user-generated content instead of sponsored content.

Still, Instagram isn't in any trouble at the current moment. Instagram occupies a different space than Tik Tok in a lot of ways. You're more likely to socialize with friends on Instagram (Image Posts, Stories). You're more likely to hold someone's attention longer on Instagram (IGTV, Carousels), and you're more likely to shop for something on Instagram (more brand friendly, Instagram Shops).

However, Instagram needs to ditch the shopping feature if they want to maintain some separation from Tik Tok. I know Instagrram makes a massive amount of money from their shopping feature, but I think it's going to hurt them in the long run. When Instagram Shops was first released, Tik Tok wasn't a threat, but that has changed now.

I think Tik Tok knows it needs to do a better job attracting brands and non-influencers (your friends) to create content on the platform. I think it's reasonable to believe that Tik Tok will release some type of stories or image post feature in the next year in an effort to compete with Instagram. I think if Instagram keeps over-monetizing their platform, then we'll see a bunch of users jump ship to Tik Tok.

However, if Tik Tok doesn't add features that compete with Instagram, then I don't think Instagram has any reason to be worried about Tik Tok. Like I said, they do operate in difference spaces at the moment.

Still, I've always hated Instagram Shops. The shopping feature on Instagram is atrocious. To this day, I don't know any person who has made a positive comment about Instagram Shops. I don't know a single person who has used Instagram shops. I've been a full-time Instagram marketer for years now, and I've never purchased anything on Instagram Shops. I don't know why Instagram pushes it so heavily. If I'm going to buy something on Instagram, I'm going to go through the link in the bio like a normal person.

I think I made this post just to vent about Instagram Shops and talk about how much I like Tik Tok. Tik Tok is cool.

I like Instagram too, but I'm excited to see what Tik Tok is going to do in the next few years.

TL;DR - If Instagram continues to push advertised content, (and Tik Tok begins to add features that compete with Instagram) then Tik Tok will be bigger than Instagram in 3 years. Also, I hate Instagram Shops.

Legitimate questions:

1.) Do you like Tik Tok more than Instagram?

2.) Have you ever purchased anything via Instagram Shops?

Yeah. I hate IG too

since they push me to burn tons of dedicated scrapers just for finding targets

When IGKing officially turns his username to TikTokKing, I will know IG is dead. xD

But on a serious note, people thought Facebook would never die, it is almost on the verge and has lost all the young audience.
Instagram feels too big right now but if they keep taking wrong decisions, it's popularity might go down by huge numbers and some other network might take some of its share.

What if Tiktok also becomes like IG one day,Just like their Very Difficult Algorithm right now and you never know when this might happen.

Every Platform when it's new or wants to gain attraction will give you good reach and algorithm will promote you without much efforts,This was the case with Instagram as well but once the platform gets what it wants,They can play with users as per their Rules:)

Tik Tok is rising; there is no doubt about it, but IG still leads the game overall.
The shopping features are useless for sure.

I agree man. TikTok is super easy to blow up but that could change once they push ads harder. Like anything else, Facebook has ruined Instagram for the average user but bettered it for their wallets. This is why I'm glad Snapchat, TikTok, and Discord remain to be independent.

But I disagree, TikTok’s engagement doesn’t translate to money like how Instagram’s engagement does. Someone averaging a 100k on Instagram per videos could get way more $ compared to someone averaging 100k on TikTok videos. And I think that’s because TikTok’s core audience is kids who have no money.

I've thought about this a lot.

I have a few friends who have 1m+ tik tok accounts, and I'm not sure they're making that much money. My guess is they are making less than 5k a month. Seriously, I don't see them run ads and their bio links aren't pushed heavily. I also never see them post sponsored content. I think some 1m+ creators (think OnlyFan girls) easily are making 50k a month, but it's so strange to see a majority of popular users not be able to use their influence.

I think part of this is because:

1.) The platform doesn't hold people's attention long enough to sell things
2.) The algorithm doesn't favor sponsored content very well

On Instagram if you have a 1m+ personal account (it's slightly different for niche accounts), you better be making at least $20k a month.

It is odd though. In the past 3 months, I've spent more money on items that I've seen being indirectly sponsored/promoted on TikTok than I have on Instagram. Whenever cool products go viral that aren't being promoted, they sell like crazy on Tik Tok.

Call me the IGKing and the TTKing :P I need to post more on Tik Tok so I can actually understand the algorithm a bit more before I do anything like that...

FB is still the most popular social media, the audience is more 35-55 years old now, and B2B is more present than ever, even if B2C is still amazing to do on FB. I still consider it the king, between groups, pages, messenger, chatbots, and their ads that is the most advanced to know people's interest (certainly because they used whatsapp to feed the algo to understand people's desire more), FB is an absolute beast.

I prefer tiktok than IG, the UX is amazing and it's an understatement.

All social media start as the cool new kid on the block, and then gradually turn into stone as they look for income sources.
The social media (and indeed any startup) life cycle. Remember MySpace?

Instagram and TikTok allow people to share fun and talents while connecting to each other, but competition wise, i think TikTok is not exactly a real competitor to Instagram. When it comes to brand marketing, Instagram is still the place to be for brands big and small.

Depends on who the brand is targeting. Tiktok could actually offer a more focused access to Gen Z (well, that might change though, recently Gen X has started to up its claim within the Tiktok population).

I agree!, I first took notice of TikTok when my wife and kids got on there and started playing with it, then I started to look around and see what it's all about, and to my amazement there with videos with like 90M views, and they were about nothing at all. TikTok is definitely a great platform.

Tiktok banned in 2nd Largest Social Media Userbase-India

Saying it from personal experience ,IG still earns for me more than 30% of my earnings even when I don't have a Big account & Tiktok still a long way to go to be a platform for brands & bloggers like me. 90% of Big Brands i know still prefer a influencer/blogger who has good instagram account,Most brands don't even ask for tiktok or facebook....Youtube & Instagram that's most brands prefer

Posted another video on Tik Tok.

It was shorter - around 38 seconds (first one was about a minute).

92k views. 17.8k likes. 214 comments. Less followers only gained around 400ish. Still pretty amazed by this.

I think it takes time for influencers to realize that they need to create a completely different style of content for Tik Tok. Unless Tik Tok changes their features (as mentioned in the post), it's just a waiting game until people find out what kind of content is going to work for them on Tik Tok.
