You should be fine doing it manually as it will let you know once you've reached the limit in the app.
Using a bot, this varies from account to account. Some people are following 1k a day, some are getting banned following <500. There are many factors. Look up some example settings here in the forum. Start slow and gradually increase to a point your comfortable with.

Could u share the follow/unfollow setting in fl that got banned ?
For the unfollowing limit, i think it around 100 user / hour. So make sure that ur unfollowing calculation not exceed unfollow 100 people in 1 hour.
From what i notice, nowadays many people got banned when using fl, so for ur own secure i suggest lay low for a while and play safe.

Can anyone explain what the phone verification status in instagram actually means? If a code is not sent, is it because the number isnt entered correctly? Does it mean I cant get use the account again?

It depends.. if a number is blocked I think they'll respond with an error. If you type your number and don't get a code, it could be a problem with your provider or Instagram, happened to me before, it fixed itself a few hours after and I was able to receive the code from IG.
Does FL actually realize if you're followbanned? i guess ive got a followban recently on one of my accounts but FL continued with "follow success" etc. Which could have made the ban longer... I actually thought it would realize a ban. Isnt that what the status box is for?
it doesn't and its pretty annoying
I agree, would be great if they fixed this issue.

I think i may have used more than 5 accounts from my one IP. Would that get my newer accounts blocked? They are stuck in phone verification & as I said, im not getting the code sent to me. Hopefully I can fix this, but if not could I set up a few more new accounts from a different IP the access them through a proxy with FL? Im a bit new to FL & proxies so im still figuring it all out... any advice greatly appreciated! Thanks...
