The estate was rented. The gov't refused to allow him to purchase it last year because of "low moral character" due to prior convictions.

People talk about the US gov being dicks. I have never heard of a govt telling someone they cant buy a home because of "low moral character"

In NZ foreigners need to get approval from the Minister of Finance before buying property of certain size. Schmitz' application was declined in 2010.

To have the opportunity to use the money to help others, and keep the money away from people who will be irresponsible with it. People talk about greedy entertainment companies who charge too much for movies and other sources of entertainment, when from the pictures and information we are getting, this guy was much greedier then any of the heads of major sports or movie production companies.

I understand enjoying life, and enjoying your income, but when you make your money is such a shady way, you would think your morals would force you to live a modest yet comfortable lifestyle, and share it with those less fortunate a la Robin Hood, taking from the rich and giving to the poor.

Not only morally the better thing to do, but the smarter thing. If he played up a charitable lifestyle, he would have a lot more sympathy in this case, and get off much lighter than he probably will.

Well, I guess if it is just for foreigners then it makes sense.
