.info vs .com

So if that was the case and you wanted to target a specific region, could you buy hosting in that country and host a .info on it to get targeted traffic from that region? Or could you just do the same thing with a .com, host it in a different area and get traffic from the local region?
Ex. Say you wanted to geo-target and use virtually identical content (but different by SE standards) and build sites that would get clicks in UK, CA, and AU (or whatever australia is) but also have sites that could use FR where large portions of the population speak/understand english. Would it be easier to just use the national .co.uk or .co.fr?

It would be easier to buy the country specific Domain extenssions like .co.uk .co.fr

But for a domain that is kind of like gender less as info they rank for the country that the IP is in.

And com is kind of all gender :) it will rank very good in most countries but will not outrank the country specific extensions if it is not much better seoed.

My understanding is that a domain is a domain and that SEs do not differentiate although almost most how posted here disagree.

I've had good success with .info sites.

Me too, I also doubt that search engines differentiate here. No problems with .info from my side.

But there is some difference, experienced internet users already noted the spammy character of info domains. Sometimes you could call .info just .spam or .bullshit and some people are aware of that. For a high quality and really long-term site (which I do not have :)) I would tend to use .com.

EDIT:

just red the thread carefully, interesting what you have said, kandor. Well, I can only say, that I have not made the experience that I run against a wall and the info domains do not get visitors, I am very satisfied with them. But right, the extension possibly plays a role, especially when looking for geo-targetted traffic. I recently set up a reverse proxy based in US, whilst my dedicated server is in Europe and will start an experiment to check, if the IP matters.

However, I would also suggest, that some of the BHW members come together to evaluate those important questions, we do not know the answer and can just report about our feelings and estimations, but I think what is worth here is only statistical data based on many and comparable setups.

That is a really sweet idea. Maybe we should start a BH Testing forum to work on these ideas. I'm sure some people, would be really psyched on the idea of actually testing out the ideas and using a sign-up fee for testing projects and buying hosting in a bunch of different areas.

I think if based on price, .infos are not worth it if you can afford .coms. I have many infos that are now in the 3rd year and I pay even more than the coms to renew. Savings are only in the beginning.

However, my .infos also get ranked as high as PR4 but like many people say, there is definitely a lack of confidence when you see an info domain.

But anyway, i still register infos as the names I want generally are only available as infos unless I'm willing to pay a premium for the domain name. Com names are very limited these days.

About ranking, I do see a difference with info and com, but not big enough to really talk about.
Also the infos tend to index slower for me.

Not by much but they do index slower.

If my com index in 4 hours, then the info usually takes me 12 hours.

I hope I'm not hijacking the thread but I figured I'd post my question here since it's along the same theme of tld's.

I'm doing some keyword research now and have a few domains that I'd like to purchase, each containing a keyword in the list that I'm shooting for. Problem as you've probably already guessed is that the .com, .net., .info, etc. are all taken. The .me and .mobi extensions are available so I'm wondering if it's wise or not to buy the .me extension for $20. The keyword contains "help" as the last word so it would be kind of cool to have xxxHelp.me as the domain name.

Coolness aside, my concern is getting on the front page of the big G. I've yet to see a .me domain name on page one of the big G so I'm not sure if it's wise to purchase a .me or not. Thoughts?

I'm finding that my .com's are getting ranked quicker in google than .info's. Given time though the info DOES catch up to the .com in regards to SERP. I'd say that for the price of .info its best to go with it when "appeal" is not your highest priority.

My personal experience leads me to believe that .com's will always rank higher, faster, and have more sustainability - and believe me I've tested this out. Now that's just my two cents on what works for me but here is some other info to consider.

Check out this site:http://www.seomoz.org/article/search-ranking-factors

Pretty cool info from the supposed experts. I'm not sure how expert they are but the info makes sense. Here is what one of the "experts" said:

Todd Malicoat Try finding a .jobs that ranks well. I dare you. Gov's and edu's are trusted more to an extent - though there are certainly filters to balance the added trust. Stay away from .biz, info, etc. if at all possible.

Take a look at that link, you want to look for the section entitled TLD Extension of Site (edu, gov, us, ca, com, etc)" Its about half way down the page!!

Like he said

.com gets indexed higher on google so more traffic to your site :)

I've found no difference in indexing between .com or .net or .org. I have found .info to index slower but can achieve page 1 in Google. But it won't beat the other 3 given equal time, back link etc status. I use .info when the other 3 as well as .biz are not available. It's choice #5. Saving 8 bucks for a year isn't worth it in my view.
