Influx of compromised accounts?

Recently I have been noticing a lot of suspicious accounts floating around the forum.

Accounts who have been here since you know 5+ years, yet are either only just posting for the first time now, or are reviving accounts that were dead years ago.

I know at least one other user has noticed this, but I am not sure if it's a coincidence or something worse. Now by no means am I saying this member is a part of this, but to give you an example of the account type there is a member with 11 posts (all today) from 2011.

So has anyone else noticed this or is it just me looking closer at accounts?

I noticed but I'm super paranoid. I want to say it's probably just a coincidence but people keep trying to sell babies in the Lounge. So...idk.
 
Yeah, but I've been seeing it since the VBulletin days.

I don't know what it is. I wouldn't say they're necessarily compromised accounts, there's probably BHW accounts being sold somewhere.
 
I agree with bart. I think those accounts are being sold somewhere and someone's trying to make a couple of bucks from the new people around here.

Yeah, I wonder if the OP actually thought someone would like to buy the baby or he was just a troll, I'm hoping it's the latter

Yeah maybe somone's made a ton of accounts over the years and is finally selling them off. I actaully noticed a thread last week saying an account had been hacked and sold on, but I think that was just nonsense. What these people don't realise is that having a six year old account with 1 post does nothing to boost your reputation, in fact it actually does the opposite

Also I think they're run by bots.

They search by keyword and post to a relevant thread. The problem is their bot does not check the thread date so they end up bumping 5 year old discussions. Those are easy to spot.
 
I think it's the CIA in cahoots with the Chinese, trying to help the Russians infiltrate all the methods so they can keep all the interwebs money in communist countries.

Never thought of it like that, but that's a really good point!
 
There's a few people on the forum who create accounts, spam messages and then resell the accounts when they get to a certain level. If you ever see bot-like or spam posts, please report them so we can check and ban as necessary. Otherwise, there's lots of people posting on other forums selling their accounts, which often explains why an 5 year old member suddenly starts posting stupid questions or saying "I am new to all this".

I picked one up this morning with the person selling the account gave a contact email address that he'd used to register the account on BHW. Genius.

Others aren't as obvious but we do have ways of picking these up - our biggest issue is that we're approaching 1,000,000 members and it's not possible to continually check them all. If you see an account that you think has been sold or hacked or there's something strange, please report it. We don't just act on impulse - it'll get investigated so you're not going to get an innocent person banned and you won't get into trouble if your suspicions didn't pan out.

I do get members contact me saying their account has been compromised - investigating these as group, we've identified certain patterns. I'll be posting a thread about it shortly and what members can do to secure their accounts.

Yesterday as OP said I saw several such threads. Bumped from months ago by new accounts. Or old accounts with one or two posts.
 
I've noticed many bumps of very old threads by both "old with no/few posts" and new accounts. And the OP of the thread that is being asked something may not have been on BHW in years. I have a feeling that those account are mostly bots. Not checking a very old thread to see if OP is still active seems something that a poorly scripted bot would do and not a person.

There's also was an influx of the AAAA,BBBB from real post and bot is posting BBBB,AAAA
 
We should just ban all members with < 100 posts from now on. 1 million members is a huge achievement and we should all just be proud of that. The forum is very big now.
