There are a few deleted domains that I'm looking at buying but :info domain does not turn any results in google. Is this a bad sign? or does google not display anything about deleted domains? Basically I want to find out if a deleted domain is penalty free.

No results means that it has been deindexed. Since deleted domains are available for $10 or less, you can just purchase it and see if Google will reindex it. Make sure it doesn't have a spammy link profile.

How long ago did the domain get deleted? Pages of a site tend to remain in Google for quite some time afterwards (months even) but if it has been longer since they were deleted then there is a good chance that all pages dropped out of Google naturally.

If the domain was only deleted in the past few days and there is nothing indexed in Google, either it was never indexed in the first place (many domains get parked) or it was deindexed by Google and may have a penalty.

You can always try looking at archive.org to see if the domain housed anything that might have gotten it deindexed or check it's backlinks to see if their is obvious spam or other such manipulation.

Check archive.org for its previous history. If you find a former domain name about Eric Clapton filled with Buy Viagra offers you know it's been spammed to death.
