Indians and "Festivals"

I am trying to learn here, in no way am I trying to come off in the wrong way. I just did some searching in Google but since I have no prior knowledge its somewhat hard.

Alot of people that work for me are from India. Great workers and I have no issues with them. It seems as if EVERY other week there is a "festival" of some sort or big event going on.

Is there a list of these? How many Festivals is there?!? I mean im in the US and we barely take Holidays seriously anymore.. I want to know more about what these "Festivals" and "Vacations" or "Events" whatever they are called.

What are they? Whats the reason behind them? Purpose? Etc.. Links will be good.

oh well there are lots of festivals in india .but not all of them are celebrated by everyone.just check the list of indian bank holidays for the major ones.

Some holidays are national holidays meant to celebrate national events.rest of the holidays are celebrated according to the religion they follow.
 
Every day is a festive day in India but that doesn't mean everybody stop working. It seems like you might be pissed off for the festival excuses from your employees.
 
i do agree that every second day there is a festival in some state of india. BUT most of them are limited to state not to whole india .
i think your workers are tellin u lie . there are maximum 30 holiday in year which celebrate by whole india at a time
 
Oh.. it's a pain man! But, the next 6-7 months would be free of too many holidays, so you'd be lucky that way.

Also, BPO's in India work with only the foreign holiday structure, as that is when business goes down. That's the reason i stay up late for customer support. You might need to tell your guys to give you a fixed set of holidays and those only would be permitted.

No that is not it at all. Most of my workers STILL work on these days. Im just interested in other Cultures. Its cool to learn how much things are different from country to country. I talked to you about that before on AIM... :cool:

From a strict cultural perspective, Indian holidays can be really interesting! The most important day from a person from Kerala is Onam, their new year, which is not celebrated anywhere else in the country. The most important holiday for someone from Andhra Prades/Tamilnadu would be Pongal, which is not celebrated in most parts of North India.

India has dozens of cultures, and even global religions like Christianity have local festivals, which aren't prominent anywhere else.

That's a pretty comprehensive list. But you shouldn't allow them holidays on ALL the festivals. I'm an Indian, and I worked yesterday as well(for myself, though)
The ones I'd allow my workers(if I get any) are marked below. Maybe you should discuss them with your workers beforehand.

Perhaps I missed some important ones. But they're the bare minimum.
 
Every Indian are crazy about their festivals , Generally we said 13 festivals in 12 month

Translation:

  • 360 days per year / 30 = 12 days
  • Every other week = every 14 calendar days

Your second sentence disproves the first one :D

Yes! :) I work all day doing my various IM related projects, and I relax by looking for high PR AA blogs while watching the snooker (when it's on)

Would love to head over to India and see one of these festivals for real though!
