Importance of Indexing?
I am gonna assume that you are a newbie somewhat like me because at some point even I had such questions in my mind, SO let me explain you in noob terms.
Lets just say, you are hungry and you go in the kitchen to cook food for yourself.
You have prepared a delicious meal with all the Cooking talent which you may or may not possess.
But for some reason if you don't EAT that delicious meal you have cooked, then you remain hungry! That delicious meal in your plate is of no use to your or anyone else.
That's indexing!
If you create great content (website, blog etc) but you do not index it then, it remains a great content ONLY FOR YOU. Google doesn't know about it since you didn't submit and it isn't indexed.

If you have a newly created Website , and when you search that website in Search engines like google, that time your website didnt appear means its not indexed. so you need start the blogging, before do onsite optimization and add Meta tags, Meta descriptions and Google Tag manager maching your keywords.

Indexing is required to return results related to search engine user’s query and rank those results in order of importance and relevancy.

any backlink without indexing is worthless if you can get benefits from backlinks then index them to search engines its like if you buy a house and registered it to your name to get full ownership and benefits.

Save your links or webpages on Search engines. Improve the ranking
Indexing is very important however I have seen certain circumstances where google search console literally detects your backlink without it being actually indexed, It's just the way they work. Indexed means google will see it as a link to your website or if you are lucky they will already detect it beforehand without any indexation.
