Indexing challenge for competitive keywords

I recently helped a client in a competitive niche to improve their search ranking. despite implementing strong On-page SEO some pages just wouldn't index or rank as expected. My solution was to optimize long tailed keywords and enhance internal linking to boost these pages. this approach did improved the visibility and indexing rate.

Do anyone else have same kind of issue to your clients? what are your ideas in handling this issue?

I'm not sure but maybe because dozens of sites are also trying to rank their content for those competitive keywords, make the index harder and longer

2 years back, I've once tried to rank home decor site and it's hard to get index even so the content is high quality
