I have heard that the amount of time a user spends within the Instagram app increases or decreases engagement. That is to say that a post will do better or worse based on just idly being in the app. This is besides likes and comments that would come from the interchange the user liking and commenting on other user's pictures. Is this true? If so, how much time do you need to spend on Instagram per day or per time you post?

Nope, I have had accounts with quality content doing just well by being scheduled two weeks in advance and haven't logged on to them in a while.

Compared to accounts I login often but the results ain't so good. But on a logical aspect, if you're logged in, you're probably doing some activity on the platform. That activity includes liking and commenting on other people posts, if you do that, some of them will return the favor and so your engagement also somewhat increases.

That might help but so far I haven't seen any data showing just being idle online helps in better engagement.

Use hashtags
Creative Caption
post 3 images daily
interact with your followers

Great tips. In addition I would add a standardized scheduling component to this, where you're posting at the same exact times a day so your users know when to expect your content instead of just posting sporadically or every time you're taking a shit. If the users know when to expect a post, it will be easier to build anticipation.

Don't overdo it with hashtags though, under 10 with different amount of exposure each

I've definitely found that being a regular poster helps.

Also it seems posting between 12pm and 6pm = a big key

The activity / conversion is much better at these hours than the 'off time'

Instagram doesn't count the time you spend using the app. Engagement is counted based on your interactions with others and the frequency of your posts.
