I'm wondering if any of you guys do anything different than just following people and unfollowing the ones that didn't follow you. I've been doing this but I find the process to be very slow.

The process is very slow but it's necessary to build an organic audience for your niche.

You also should :

- Find some good community boards related to your niche and pin into them quality pins.

How many times do you pin daily ?
 
The more pins / boards your account has the better results . Its still painfully boring and slow . I have some accounts follow back 20% and some only 1% , i have tried to find out why but so far no luck.
 
If you're willing to spend some money , i can get targeted followers for you. It take 2-3 days for 1000 targeted followers.
 
Get into some popular community boards. There is another way. Is to go to the top rated boards(even the private ones.) and comment stuff like: "Thank you for repinning my picture." A lot of people see these pins and when they see your comment, there is a good chance that they will follow you.

What sort of budget would be needed to do this on each account? Are they active bots, or addmefast followers?
 
group boards are helpful.
i used to do mass invites.
but the pinterest algo is different now, making it tougher for us marketers.
just spend time using the site and come up with your own methods.
 
Price your followers in words and the viewers. There is a big chance to increase your followers. If you are ready to spend money to increase the followers, get help from the service who offers targeted followers. Pin to your niche based boards that helps slowly.:)
 
I tried Healzer's suggested like, follow, comment, repin, and pin actions and they do yield a very nice percentage of followers back. I did his action across 14 accounts. the biggest challange is just the workflow in pinblaster to build the right type of targeted user list to do all the actions. Pinning of course is the easiest since you just scrape other peoples built out boards. But getting a good spread of users pins to like, comment, and repin is really challenging since as are looking at about another 1500 pins actions.

I have only just started and noticed I get 10% follow back rate. I guess from what you say that's pretty good :)
