Inactive IM Journeys (Archived)

I noticed a distinctive trend in the IM Journeys section, enthusiastic thread starters would often start off their journeys, actively keep it updated for a period of time (for months and some good ones even for years) but eventually the updates would come slow halt leading to then totally abandoned. Nothing wrong with that as humans tend to have other priorities and opportunities in life than to keep a thread alive but some abandoned threads often do get bumped to the 1st few pages by unawared members not realizing the OP hadn't been updating for quite a long while. While my point here is not to delete them off totally as the info & experience shared are worth gold & priceless but inactive threads without any further updates by the individual OPs should be marked and move to an archived section. They shouldn't be closed either as others can still comment and answered by other members or sometimes the OPs will want to revive their past journeys.

I propose to create a sub-section (one-level deep) in the IM Journeys section and move those inactive/abandoned threads there and mark them as "Archived". Threads will be still left opened for comments and if the OP wanted to update their own thread, it still be able to move back to the IM Journeys section. In this way, the existing journey section will be active with current and updated and not littered with 'dead' comments.

If extra help is needed, I can volunteer to clear this up but the way I do it is to only consistently move these inactive threads that are identified as "abandoned for a period of time" as and when they are bumped to the first 2 pages. The older threads behind will be left untouched unless they are being bumped up, in this case this will cut down unnecessary moderation time and the effort needed to dig in to check the last OP posts.

This is just post count spam you're flagging up here, is it not? If people are bumping threads that have been inactive for such a long time then it falls under that category. Unless I'm missing something?

probably I've not been long in the forum enough to differentiate what is post count spam vs legitimate posts but irregardless, such old abandoned threads do get bumped un-necessarily (whether on purpose or not) therefore do you rather not do anything about it and just let it status quo? Somebody else might be looking in that thread (appeared on page 2 as of now) and wasted 5 mins of their time in the thread not realizing the last OP post was in 2023.

As a user point of view and experience, I surf the journey threads and find it rather disheartened to read through a thread (especially one with many pages) to find that the OP hasn't been updating for quite some time.

I know there no incentives to moderate such a dull section unlike the BST/sales section (!ka ching!!) thats why I put up myself to help out a bit to do the grunt job if nobody wants to do it.

Well, if the posts are reported and subsequently deleted then the thread returns to its previous position and is no longer bumped. So this is where the community can help us out by reporting such cases because necrobumping is against forum rules.

This hasn't been a major issue that we've noticed but, again, we don't catch everything and the community may see it differently. If anyone else has input on this, we'd like to hear it.

thanks, for the record I am not interested in becoming a full moderator or as a forum staff.

Since this is my suggestion, I should put myself up as a volunteer (walk the talk) if nobody else has the time in this particular IM Journey section. The only task for this is to scroll through the first few pages daily and identify "abandoned/inactive" being bump and move them off to the Achived section. Heck I think somebody can even use AI to programme a script to crawl and check the posts against the OP start and last post dates to compare and identify them.

We generally don't employ volunteer moderators on that basis. And I would say it's unlikely we would change this policy for a task which, as mentioned, hasn't been identified as a problem area by us at this time.

If you really want to help us clear this section up, report the posts when you see them!

If nobody else has anything to add to this topic, I'm going to close it.

Like I've said, @mointernet , if you see any more examples of what you've outlined then don't be afraid to report them and we'll look into them. That's what we're here for. But thank you for the suggestion.
