I printed flyers for my books and apps. I spread them in university on bulletin boards. I gave them to random people.

But I have never had a single sale from them.

My app was downloaded due to adwords advertising.
My book was sold through organic searches to my website.

But I have never been able to make flyers for books and apps work by having them print and spreading them(even to many households).

In which cases do flyers work?

Well it's the digital age, flyers lost most of their power but if you want to make it work you have to put something on there that will trigger people and people do not get triggered by a book promotion on a flyer.

You need be creative and offer some kind of incentive to make it worth their while.

The only time fliers really worked for me was when I put up advertisements for cheap Chinese tablets near a few local schools. It was at least a little better than just posting them on Craigslist.

I've had flyers work if you target the right socio-economic group with something that the crowd would want. ie debt help in poorer areas (I get paid per sign up) and sales on fancy things in the rich areas (commission on sales). They are very hit or miss.

Dude why do you advertise your "online business" offline? Flyers, that is the biggest money waste you can do. There is 0 data , you can't track anything it's a total waste. We don't live in 1920's anymore !

I would say they work for local busineses. Example local food restaurant delivery, gyms...

Agree. For me they work well advertising local business. I think people are more likely to call when they realise the business is very close by.

As said by other members, Flyers will work with local businesses, and you should do it right by knowing the exact target if you want it to work.
I've used Flyers for one of my local projects related to education (Website that provides useful information about what university to choose ..),
And to keep track of the conversion I used a different link on the flyers (You can use a coupon in your case, I didn't use it because the service I'm offering is free).

Alongside an online campaign it can be a powerful tool. Not everybody uses the internet regularly.

You should try cpa. Send people to a landing page and then promote cpa offers with email marketing

Print on backside of Cornflakes, i do read that stuff everytime I do breakfast haha. Anyway as few people already said before me: flashy stuff on flyers that makes people read it. Nobody likes to read boring stuff if they are not in position to be forced such as toilets, waiting queues and so on.

University students dont have money to start, they spend their money on beer and weed not books.
What is the book about>? That will help immensely.

The problem with flyer marketing is that people are getting them unsolicited and hitting the right person with the flyer is nearly impossible.

Why not invest the money spent on printing flyers, and the time invested in handing them out to things that that have worked in the past? Like online marketing?

Flyers for promoting books and apps wrong selection plus you can't scale it can you?

I tried something similar for a service a provide. Unfortunately, I was also not able to make a single sale out of this though it was very targeted audience.

for books and apps i think the time of flyers is over on campus. flyers work well for one time events such as concerts, sales, parties, etc.

also effective as part of a wider spreading the word/raising brand awareness campaign.

expecting random conversions worked maybe 10 years ago or more.

i use them to promote my product on local grocery stores, right next to the lottery and beer specals
