In-Depth Articles? Thoughts?

What are you thoughts on in-depth articles? Looks like they starting to pop up for few searches after the organics.

Increasingly the way SERP's are going. Ideally I try and make sure all my content is in excess of 500 words, unless its a news story I cant flesh out. On some things a 1,000-1,2000 word indepth article will perform really well and you will find such articles ranking well for some quite competitive keywords.

What do you mean by "in depth articles"... just something long? Usually if I'm going to spend time writing about something I need at least 1500 words to get the job done. I don't know if the length of the article has contributed to their [the article's] success over say something similar at 500 words. Though it would be my guess that something with more information is generally higher valued than something with less information. (though keeping in mind longer doesnt always mean better or more informative)

There is evidence on the web that longer content is both better from a usability standpoint as well as from a search engine optimization standpoint. Search engines have always frowned on thin content (within reason) so its good to provide as much information on a topic as possible.
