Improved article but it dropped in rank

I have an article that was ranking 3rd in the SERP. I added another 500 words or that and improved the grammar but its dropped down to number 7. Its definitely improved the quality of the article so I'm a bit confused.

Is this Google dance because its been changed?

1. You think you may have improved the article, but you could have made the article less relevant to the search query and search intent which is one reason why you would lose rank.

2. It could be a google dance as the algorithm is deciding where to rank the article now.

Wait a couple of weeks and monitor the ranking of the page daily if possible using a rank tracker or private tab in your browser. If ranking doesn’t increase, remove the content you added. Then repeat monitoring ranking.

You can have too much content in an article. Always check the word count of the competition that is ranking. Stay between the minimum and maximum word count of ranking competitors.
 
basically, I would never touch an article that ranks top3 - who is telling you that it is improved - any seo writing tools ?
 
Because of content quality, will cause to drop the rank, You can wait some days If you do not see any changes You can improve the content quality.

This requires more than just a comment from past knowledge. More test? Yes. Bookmarked.
 
Google is re-evaluating what you did to the page.
If your trust score is high with them, then you will see results in a short period of time, if not then you will have to wait longer.

There are many things that can cause you to lose rank, but the one that you encountered most likely is a re-evaluation.
It does not mean your content is worse or better, it's an automated process google initiates when you change stuff on your page.

It's hard to point out what you did wrong unless the page can be analyzed. But considering you added another 500 words means you might have changed topics slightly, and now you might start ranking Top 3 for other search terms if the topics are easy to rank and the "content" is actually better targeted.
 
I guess you shouldn't touch it and modify it if it worked well in the first place, as now it has been reindexed and you are seeing ranking fluctuations because of it, and you'll have to wait for some time for things to get back to normal, but you may not achieve the exact same ranking position you had before. You think it's improved as you added more words, but that's not the only thing that counts here and you should check your article through some SEO tool to get precise info about its quality and improvement.

But in all fairness it's only a google dance
 
Google is A bitch when it came to changes, positive or negative, first they drop your rank, then going to test using live users, If all goes well you will see an improved rank. You will know for sure in 1-2 weeks.
 
It can be temporary, you have to wait for some time. It will surely improve in rankings.
 
I never make changes to top 3 posts. When I do make changes to a post to improve rankings, the article drops in rank and climbs back up within 2 weeks. If google thinks its lower quality, youll keep a lower ranking.
 
It can be google dance, you should wait for some time and see if you get the original rank again.
