Importance of site logos?

I've heard this come up a few times in multiple methods.

They say that you should have a website logo that contains your main keyword or whatever... does this really help? They say bots can actually read it or something.

Bots can't read site logos, it can read the image's ALT tag.

For example, if your site is in html and this is the link for your logo:
<img="link to image" alt="This is my site logo"></img>

The bot will read "This is my site logo"

IMO that's bs. bots can read text logos, not image logos.

While they could in theory read it using OCR it wouldn't do much if anything. I would say that what OP said is a myth and the people you were referring to were probably talking about alt tags.

Pictures are not read by bots,
in order to get a picture read, its alt tag must have the keyword.
But It helps the consumer to read it depending on what you mean
Coming from the webdesign/graphic design world, its helpful, but only to a human reader
and since we are talking about bots, your alt tags are king

Obviously if you're using an image logo Google does not register it as text. Just make sure you use proper ALT tags.

Image logos can't be read by bots besides the alt tag... Though a good logo does help to show site authority.

Well bots can read human faces and persons (just check the feature on Google or Facebook) but maybe not logos. But as for manual reviews a logo will be a good feature to have! (and if you plan to run the site for a long time)

Sorry man, that's just not the case.

Google will not use OCR technology to look at text logos, that's simply a waste of time and resources for Google.

Back to the topic, logos are good for USERS and human reviews. If you are building a real brand and viable business, a logo is essential. It helps brand identity and awareness, plus a number of other factors.

It's why Apple fights so viciously to have NO copycat logos in the world. Some are even to the extreme.

You guys really underestimate Google.

I wouldn't put it passed them. They obviously cannot read the unpopular and custom fonts but if you're a newbie and make your logo out of Arial or Times New Roman, there's a chance they could read it.

However, I would stick with the alt tags if you were to do a image logo. I usually make sites in mass amounts and entering the title in text is faster and more efficient.

No chance!
Though a layered PSD can include text, the search bots are not intended to read deep inside this format.
