what is the best way to use the ALT tag when using images as links to other pages?. Should I use it to describe the pic, to say it is a link to a given page/article, any other use?.
In all cases, the pics are relevant to the pages or articles they link to.

I would add some encouraging words like 'Get a free iphone' if you were linking to a cpa offer about iphones

I forgot to mention the idea is to link to older pages to try to keep visitors engaged a bit longer while doing some seo.

I would give them a little teaser in the alt tag which would help the ctr. Or a small excerpt would do fine as well.

The alternate (alt) attribute was initially used to describe the image if the user was unable to see the image for reasons such as a slow Internet connection or the user was blind and was using screen reading software such as JAWS Screen Reader (yes, blind people use the Internet, too). So instead of seeing the image of let's say a flower pot, the user would see (or hear if using screen reading software) a description of the image such as "empty brown flower pot" instead. By describing the images, you also give them a chance to rank in Google Images as well.

So yes, describing the picture is the way the alt attribute was meant to be used.

The ALT tag provides descriptive alternative text for when an image cannot be displayed; the TITLE tag is used for providing supplementary information about the element. It has been reported that Google focus on the ALT tag text, so if you are only going to use one - use the ALT tag.
The ALT attribute briefly describes what the image shows.

Here is what I like to do when I can and as time goes on:

Name the image with a keyword that explains its use:
    Filename:
    hard*****lorringlogo.jpg
    hard*****loortopwidget.png

Describe the contents in the alt tag:
use keywords if it can be done without being spammy:

    ALT TAG:
Instead of "living room floor" say "sunlit hardwood floors in living room."

For the title, give it a caption that makes sense for your customer and SEO.
    Title:
We make your hardwood floors shine!!

Alt for image is like meta description for page
