Are there any tools to bulk edit alt text on image intensive site. I have about 1k images that I need to add individual alt text too each. Is there an efficient way to do this?

If I hire a freelancer for this task can I have the accomplish this with our granting admin rights to my site?

It's a repetitive task within a browser, so probably you can automate the process with iMacros.
 
What are you using in backend? Wordpress or something else.
 
Using Wordpress, I tried editing the alt tag through the media console. Was very slow and monotonous.

are there anysuggestions on alt tag / image naming scheme?

‘just simply describe the image in the description?
 
There is no easy way to edit the alt text of images. But, a Paid plugin Media Library Spreadsheet will help. Check this Guide and Tutorial

Or Hire someone as VA to do this and Give him Logins with limited access.
