I have a real estate website, for one property listing, there are say 20 photos - what are the best uses for alt tags in this case? does it matter if all the photos have the same alt tag including the keyword? Perhaps separated by "keyword image 1" and "keyword image 2"

test, test and test some more

I don't add them Google images knows what they are using their image recognition software
my sites seem to do well in Google images all the time without them

correct me if I am wrong
alt tags are for people with vision disabilities mostly

Use them to quickly describe the image. Use keywords if relevant but don't force it.

I usually add alt tags that are relevant to the image and post. Other than that, as long as your images are attached to a good article or page then it's not a problem actually.

has anyone taken an image and placed it into Google image to see where else that image is posted
I have and it will find every posting that image shows

so Google does not need alt tags to tell it what the image is
it might of been important at one time as they were building the image recognition engine
today I highly suspect alt tags are at the bottom of the on page requirements

folks you need to test instead of blindly doing things
I never add alt tags and almost all my images show up for the keywords I target

again my understanding of alt tags these days is for the vision impair people to help them know what the image is about

I just spent 2 days editing alt tags on 500 pages. I found out from a friend that I had overoptimized my alt tags when i had built the site I was adding my keyword into the tags just quickly pasting it in not thinking about it. These days with keyword density and anchors you have to be much more careful.

I would make my anchors descriptive to the thing the image is about. The point of the alt tag is to show the text when the image doesent load so keep that in mind. I also stay with medium to long alt text but thats me I think in my OP it will get more keywords in there.
