I'm such an idiot.

I've been searching for the last 45 minutes for a domain name for a project I've been thinking of working on for quite a while now but not got round to putting anything into action. The ideal name and the one I searched for first was taken, so I spent the next 40 minutes looking for any other relevant available names, using hyphens and other terms around the name but nothing. Nothing but crappy .biz and .cc.

Anyway, before giving up on the idea I decided to go back to the ideal name I searched for first and do a whois and try and find out who owned it, as it was parked by godaddy so not being used for a site just yet. I thought maybe I could find this guys details and make him an offer for the domain.

I did find his details, and it was me!! Turns out I bought this domain 6 months ago when I first started to consider the project. :smashfrea

I really need to get rid of some of these domain names or at least do something with them.

I made a disallow statement with a slash, but got interrupted and failed to put the folder I wanted disallowed before I saved the file. Needless to say the traffic disappeared. I thought I had gotten some manual penalty, so I asked for a reconsideration from gogole, which did nothing. I finally figured it out about a month later, but that moment of distraction caused the site to get deindexed and I was pissed. Even more so after I found out that I did it to myself.

I got the site re-indexed, but lost the domian age.

Oof, that's harsh. Just shows what just a little mindfart can do.

Taught me a lesson, every time I save a robots file, I go back in and look at what I did. Hard lesson, but I earned it and learned it.

Well, the good thing is that u own the domain!

Depending on how many domains you manage, you might want to look into a domain administration software. I use "watch my domains". It has LOTS of functions, plus it lets me track everything I have registered, export lists, set alerts, etc. This is a must if you have lots of domains registered or if you don't want to lose track of them.
