The government wants to pass this bill: COICA bill, named the Protect IP Act

in order to eradicate google search engine, etc. from links to copyright material.

I'm scared the government is becoming too powerful and able to block users from their right to content.

This is almost censorship like in China.

What can we do to stop this from happening?

If you are now in China, Oman, Dubai, UAE, Belize... you can allways use OpenVpn, which works with any internet connection and uses UDP (instead of TCP)

To fully grasp how this bill will pan out, we have to see the issue with EU right now and their 'internet firewall'.

If this passes, you will know the US is screwed 100%.
This isn't about some kids downloading warez off the internet. It's about the right that the government will have in censoring the internet worldwide (ICANN is US run, so is almost everything else), blocking domain names at the ISP level if any media company thinks it should be blocked and tons of other bullshit.

MAFIAA is losing this war and they know it. Instead of conforming and adapting to the changes of the world, they've essentially become lawyers. Instead of producing real content, they've turned into lawsuit factories to generate money. Its not the downloading that is flawed, its the companies mindset, because if it we're Apple would not have had record profits. The flawed thinking here is that media companies can stop people from downloading their content. How do you think kids in schools find a way around filters? People in censored countries find a way around filters? Its not going to be long before a 'free' DNS server will emerge or they will continue with VPNs and proxies.

I find this is pretty ridiculous, especially for a country who holds freedom as it's strongest principle.

Senator Durbin, who supported the COICA anti-piracy bill, has this week voiced his concerns about Internet censorship taking place in China. Yesterday Durbin published a letter he wrote to the Chinese search giant Baidu. In his letter the Senator voices his concerns over Baidu?s censorship efforts and asked the company to take ?immediate steps? to stop them.

Afraid we can't do anything man. They say that the 'people' run the government. While that is technically true, we are not those people.

The only possible solution would to create a great uproar so that the government feels if they do pass the bill there would be a crazy backlash but I doubt 99% of people even know what this bill means.

Well, if you look at the rate at which the internet is turning into a wasteland of spam and copyrighted material it almost seems eminent that the government would have to step in at some point. Right now the internet is a little like the wild west and it will eventually have to be governed better. Not that I want this, but that is just my 2 cents.

Just another example of the government getting involved with things they should not be involved in.

If they were to pass a law like this, there would be no more search engines. They just wouldn't be able to afford the manpower needed to process all the removal requests. If it ever goes to court, there will be a team of engineers and lawyers that will get it shut down.

We'll do the same as we did before google, search engines and www. came along.

Sorry... but am i missing something here.

I do not really see this as government having too much power.
Sounds like the purpose of this bill is to stop people from accessing
pirated material.

Sounds like it will be a major blow to those that benefit from copyrighted material.....
It might NOT stop everyone....
and there will always be a way around it...
but for the majority of the people benefiting financially.....
this will wipe out your business.

Aside from access to DNS.... it also prohibits other services like paypal, ISP etc from dealing with you and your site.

Such regulations are always way too late. The technically challenged politicians will regulate tcp/ip eventually but the Onion protocol is already strong enough. Until they realize (and regulate) that, people will be exchanging prime numbers hinting the byte sequence of a software that then would simply need to be recalculated to the power of some other prime.

If anything, and as usual, the only people affected will be the normal users which would ultimately benefit the IM community.

But these are just vague predicitions, the way things go the EU would probably break up sooner and America has the deficit issue to take care of first. We live in interesting times, salted with sensationalism

ahh there doing way more then making it so no one can access pirated material. There putting measures in place so that they can control the internet. When all hell breaks lose and people turn the internet to find out whats going on or to mass together, we wont be able too. The shit the US is in now is just too big. We arent backing our gold with money, were just printing it as we see fit. Something big is going to happen and this is there way of keeping us uninformed. Your going to turn to facebook or cnn and all your going to see is what the government puts there.
