IM is not stable

Thanks for this message. I often have this thought in the back of my head, probably rendered by paranoia, but what you said is certainly true.

People seem to talk about 'stability' as an absolute.

It's not an absolute, it exists in varying degrees.

And I can certainly see how someone who's been in the same job for 15 years takes the view that their paycheck is more stable than depending on a Google ranking, and, for the most part, I would agree with them. The question is whether you want a life of certainty, or whether you actually want to live a little.

As always - life is a tug of war between what we want the most, and what we fear the most.
And just where that ends up balancing determines what risks we take and what we settle for.

You want to know what's stable?

Taxes.

Oh but that's not so, suppose you had a company based in Amsterdam where there's no tax on intellectual goods, perhaps you siphoned it through a company in Ireland first where tax is around 12.5% and then returned it there afterwards to a 'different' company. Tax is only stable for the lazy/ignorant/small.

In case you're wondering, that's called a 'Double Irish Dutch Sandwich' scheme used by our dear friends at Google to avoid paying hundreds of millions in the US.

Absolutely, the difference between chaos and opportunity is perception...and let's be honest, SEO isn't all that chaotic but there's a fair opportunity.

Absolutely. Only 2 things are certain in this life, death and taxes lol.

Not sure about death though, in 50-100 years humans might even be immortal (nano-tech etc.), but TAXES will always be there!

Everything else is unstable/uncertain/unsure!

Working at McDonald is quite stable so is the army, in fact the army is super stable.
IM compared to other jobs is different for most people because a paycheck is not guaranteed and can end tomorrow.
Its true the army can fire you, but the odds are so low of that happening you can plan retirement.

Self employed and IM are special and that you can make $10,000 a day for a week and never make anything again
for 6 months.

Alot of countries are starting to cutback on their military size, the UK is going to have its smallest army in 250 years pretty soon. Various countries are also starting to use more modern equipment that can allow for a smaller size while remaining just as effective. The new naval destroyers the US is getting is only going to have about 140 crew compared to the 300 the previous generation had. Its not as guaranteed any more like it was years ago.

Well said.. The beauty of IM is that you are your own boss. You decide your paycheck and are not limited to a fixed one every month. :)

Just found this, I motivated myself actually haha :)

Let's GO!

The price to pay for more freedom is less stability. I would rather have freedom than a false sense of stability!
