I'm getting Soft 404 errors on some of my key pages

You can do the following activities to resolve the soft 404 error:
- Configure your server to return the proper not found error code (404/410)
- Improve the page and request indexing.
- Redirect the page using a 301 redirection.

Why would htaccess have anything to do with it?

Could be sending a wrong error code back, could be set to the wrong get/push etc. requests... Lots
Have you run it through any tool to check for this, such as Screaming Frog?

Yes, sounds plausible. It's fk'n annoying though....damn Google...Soft 404...such an anal term - its so wishy-washy and vague - if it was thin content that would make sense but these are monsters that carry 3-4K of content and used to be premo-pages
