Well Yeah Dude, Most Small Town/City's Aren't The Best Places When It Comes To Finding A Job.

It Would Be A Good Idea To Look Outside Of One's Immediate Area, If The Job Market Is Sucky.

It really depends on whether you actually have enough money to pay the rent or not.
If you do... why would the landlord care how you get the money? Whether you do IM, or have a "real" job, even if you were selling crack on the street corner, or get a welfare check, what difference does it make? Money is money.
In this case, just photoshop some PayPal statements, printouts of affiliate accounts, etc. If she bitches about how this is not a "real" job, well there are many people working from home, whether its affiliates, content creation, web design, etc, why would this not be considered "real" to her?

If you dont, however, well theres a few options.
The "freelancing" (article writing, website creation, programming, etc etc) has been already presented in the previous replies, you can try that.

And while maybe this is not what you want to hear, but if there is absolutelty zero jobs in your town, have you considered moving to a somewhat bigger city?
I dont know how the situation is regarding jobs in the USA... but cmon, its not North Korea...
I know that where I live (Canada), there are many, many opportunities at "entry level" jobs, whether its retail, customer service, telemarketing (both the legit ones and the shady boiler-room type operations), security guard, etc and I know many people who didnt even finish high school making $15 or more an hour.

If you cant, or dont want to get a "regular" job, for whatever reasons... well I dont want to sound like I am being a douchebag, but its not a good idea to rely "making a living" online, unless you REALLY got your shit together already, and have demonstrated that you can make STABLE revenue, from different sources.

While the ideas shown here and in the other threads can help you out, and make some extra money, making enough to earn a decent living is not that easy.

By using some methods found in the forum here and elsewhere, making $100 + a day is possible... to me, I've done it. The challenge is making that amount every day, month after month, and its something me, and probably many other here, are still working on.

This is why I still keep my job, why I try to build some income online.

This reminds me of that badass old movie Over The Edge where the kids riot because there's nothing to do.

I don't think you should fake any earnings, that may require you hand over some money.

Article writing is good, but it doesn't pay diddly.

You need to have a site and your own hosting, and find a solid program to promote. Use your writing skills for YOU.

In the meantime, take inventory of everything you have, and you have to offer.

Have anything to sell? Sell it. Get it on ebay or what ever. Can you make a site for someone? Put some flyers up around town and offer to get people their own blogs/sites up for cheap. Visit the local businesses and ask them if they have a web presence.

Get a plan together and stick to it, or you'll find yourself in the same spot next year.

The old saying 'the best time to find a job is when you have one' is very true. Seems like when a person is out of work it is hard to find a job. If you can write articles then 'Associated Content' is a good place to start. Also you can sell your writing here and on other forums such as DP and Warrior. There is another site that pays for articles but can't think of it now, you might try a SE to find it.
Also, I have done this in the past whenever I have needed money, go to a thrift store such as Goodwill or AMvets and purchase stuff to sell on eBay or at a flea market. You could also do landscaping in your area. Just a few things off the top.

As far as a job goes, I don't know where you live but, if its winter shovel snow, if its hot out mow grass or landscape or sweep dust if your in a desert. You have to make it happen or like another person said get out of that town. Sell something get a greyhound pass to somewhere you could sleep out doors if you had to and go. If you dont have internet access go to the library it's free. If your town does not have a library with free internet, well thats another reason to find a new town. Ok here's some quik make a few bucks advise. go find im4newbies buy it, It's like 7 - 10 bucks, sign up as the reseller it's free (affiliate it what this is called if you have not made it tat far in im yet) and sign up for every free traffic exchange you can find. These are loaded with people who have not made it yet and are looking the in4newbies should get you bus fair at least. No auto surfs cause no one looks at them, you will want manual surf and you have to sit and surf, if you own your product or site than an auto surf will get you hits but thats not what you need right now. Thats all I got for you, i dont own im4newbies so please don't ask me questions about it. More tips at zerofrictionmarketingpro its a dotcom.

Did you realize that this is a 2008 thread and all the dude and dudette that you referring to most probably are not active anymore. And you giving an advice to someone who had the problem 3 years ago?? anyway this is the lounge and hope you realize what does that mean to your post.

Gee guys it was obviously an accident, he didn't look at the date before he posted. Now for all of you saying post inflation, the guy gave a well thought out response that would have added value to the situation had it not been such an old thread. Post inflation would be is "ooh I feel sorry for your situation" not the thick paragraph that this man wrote. Besides we all know lounge doesn't increase post count so why does it really matter...

charge people online to watch you punch yourself full force in the face... that could go viral so you might want to toughen up a bit.
or
do a ton of stuff around the house for the old lady, that way you might not be working, but you are cleaning gutters, fixing leaky taps that sort of thing..
