Hello BHWians,

I'm a moderator (by profession and passion) and till date, have grown multiple subs. They are small, but have active engagement.

My main idea about community was never about volume. There are thousands of abandoned communities that hardly gets the reach it deserves. One example of recent time is r/juststart. When content writing used to be a thing before AI, this sub was a lush green one. Now it's a burial ground.

So here's how to grow a community, sustainably and without getting bans.

1. First do a research. Think of a niche, or a passion segment. This is very important. Unless you are passionate to talk daily without caring whether anybody is listening or not, you're not gonna make it

2. Brainstorm name. Make sure this has a vague keyword or a proper million dolar name that people search on google and reddit. For example if you're doing a cooking niche. Then you can keep r/homecooking if it's not available then r/cookingbyxyz works both ways

3. Never, I repeat, never use the main admin account for any kind of external or internal activities. If it's harmed by any chance, you're doomed

4. Treat it as social media Marketing asset. Create calendar, post regularly, shamelessly and keep commenting shamelessly.

5. You can now setup auto replies and interactive posts like threads, polls etc.

6. Next, start off-page where your community will actually be seen. A bonus tip, find out on Google some 'online communities for xyz'. Now whenever you land on any such articles, start editorial outreach to publish or rectify or update about your community within the article. This is important as a source of traffic

7. Next, go search reddit for suitable threads to market. For example, if it's a community of cooking, find relevant threads and add comments like, 'oh yes, I've cooked this before. Infact, coincidentally post the actual same thing on r/cookingxyz'

8. Leverage other platforms in the same way, filtering traffic towards sub.

9. If you want to do it professionally, get a landing page or a simple website. And start SEO. You may also run quick ads.

10. If you fancy other stuff, then you can talk to smaller fb pages to spread simple reddit threads with a 'curiosity tag'. Like- "This woman, quit her job miraculously, only to find her passion in Cooking, and this is what redditors had to say for her". Easy

Follow these and you'll be able to grow your community in no time!

Cheers

Thanks for your post! Could you please explain what you mean by 'never use the main admin account for any kind of external or internal activities'?

I think he means posting or interacting with some subs or activies, the mod account should be a alt one

I’ve grown a couple of meme subs, and consistency really is the secret nobody wants to hear.

Building a strong community really comes down to patience and authenticity. Quick hacks won’t last—genuine connections and steady effort are the real game changers.

What's a moderator by profession? U get paid to moderate?

It's to keep the main sub safe. If your account gets banned, or someone hacks it, you're going to lose the account with the subreddit. But having two separate accounts, you'll at least keep the sub isolated and protected. I think this is still how it works on FB. You have pages or groups linked to a main account, and then use separate accounts as moderators or whatever to interact etc.

ObsidianFlow and couple of others are right. You need to keep your admin account sanitized or else you can risk getting it banned. One more point, NEVER EVER AT ANY FCKN COST boost posts for atleast 2 months, with fake engagement. Reddit's gonna ban for sure

This has some nice insights, thank you
Glad you liked

And then....
Sorry?

Absolutely
Good insights here. Treating it like a marketing asset and not just a hobby is what separates the successful ones. Also, keeping the main account clean is a golden rule. Many overlook that.
No doubt about that!

Really solid advice consistency and niche passion truly make the biggest difference when building a lasting community.

Thanks for sharing this, really helpful! Love how you focused on real engagement instead of just numbers that part hit home

If you go to the subreddit you'll still find posts with lesser upvotes but solid engagement
