Illegal software usage in European countries

Hi,

I have some questions about using illegal or pirated software in European countries such as in Netherlands. Do people really use pirated software in those countries? What about Microsoft XP or Microsoft Office or such software?

I live in Malaysia most of the time and piracy is prohibited there but still most people use pirated software easily. Is it the same in Netherlands? I asked a few people and they said they use illegal version of software after downloading but burning/selling illegal software is not recommended.

I know there are many webmasters from Netherlands here, so if anyone kindly give me some advice, it would be great.

Im from the Netherlands, and yes we do download a lot.

We have pretty good laws about it, but I am afraid that that is about to change

What I know is that Netherlands have a more relaxed, layed back way of thinking and laws too (everyone knows what I'm referring too). I also know that PirateBay used servers from Netherlands so this is a big hint that the cyber legislation is more laxed too.

Actually I am about to move to Netherlands, I have been working as freelance web designer for around 4 years now. Recently my wife got a job there and we are moving there soon. So I am looking for more info on webmaster life in Netherlands to prepare myself. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you have a company, you should definitely use only genuine software.
Unless you maybe work alone or with just a few people.

But one teacher for example, had an PC company before. Basically, he was selling Computers and one time, one of his employees forgot the copied XP-CD in the CD-drive. The computer was sold, and the people who bought it, called the Microsoft hotline, because they had a problem with installing XP.

The output, Microsoft sent his lawyers and he got a BIG FAT fine -> Company broke & now he is a teacher

In any country, I think
- at office you should have legal soft
- at home do what you like to do

Many people in the Netherlands use illegal software on their pc and downloads a lot.
It is verry easy to download some software from thepiratebay of another torrent site.

Hi - I used to live in Amsterdam for a while. I would say definitely learn Dutch - if you can speak English then you'll pick it up fairly quickly.

As far as illegal software - people use it all the time for personal use - don't sell it though that could get you in trouble..

Yeah we use pirates in europe too. I have heard that even if you use them in your corporate and get caught they just make you pay the amount you would pay anyway (of course not if you do million € business with pirates)...

Ghoast - Thanks for the useful info. I can speak english, bengali, bahasa malay, spanish, hindi and urdu so sure I will try another one hoping it will make things easier.

KeijoKala - I am working as freelance web designer so hope this will keep things on the low end.

dennis123 - Thanks for the detailed sharing of your experience. Most IM software we use such as Scrapebox, AMR or SenukeX must be original cause the cracked versions are full of bugs and most features do not work, just waste of time and effort.

So far I am feeling that it would be a great experience being there as I can see lots of friends from Netherlands are here at BHW. Sure I am feeling confident with your advice.
