I've noticed on two occasions now that my IG engagement has dropped dramatically after running an ad campaign with them (promoting a post). A user suggested that they sway your reach to get you to spend more on ads.

I also heard that they also limit reach for business profiles. A number of users I know have changed back from business to normal and their engagement has shot back up. Could IG be doing it on purpose to get businesses to spend?

What do you guys think? Any truth to this?

About the ad campaign that's a yes, if you change your budget, IG will see, oh now he ha more money to spend and will give you worse results for you to keep spending money. But for switching to business profile that's a no, there's no proof that personal accounts have a higher engagement than business accounts.

What the users I know have told me is that their engagement has recovered by switching back to personal. Would love to hear about other people's personal experiences.

I have not seen a change from switching althoug the ad thing may be right...I'm fucked. I hope there is a cooldown for that.

What I do know, is that IG is more focused on delivering RELEVANT content to people so it cares about engagement in order to give engagement. You need to find ways to make your engagement increase so that IG will help also.

This is what I heard in the grapevine. Once you switch your account to business, Instagram will flag it. Even if you switch back to personal, nothing will change. Instagram knows that you took it to business, thus, switching back won't take that flag off.
Those that experienced more engagement after switching back from business to personal, were just experiencing a temporary thing. After a week of so, that personal account will go back to how the business account was doing.
