Temporary ban at 881 unfollows today. Certainly an improvement. I don't know where people are getting ideas purely based on spamming. Unless you all have inside information, we don't know exactly the purpose behind preventing unfollows. There has always been a limitation on unfollows and follows. Going too fast before this change would have resulted in a temporary ban as well.
With that said, it could be that there was server issues perhaps, who knows. Maybe there was too much activity and they had to throttle everything. I don't think it's worth it to blindly speculate unless you have some type of previous experience or knowledge to go on.
Limiting comments, DMs, and things of that nature makes perfect sense to me. Limiting unfollows/follows, beyond avoiding too much stress on the server, does not make sense. There are a lot of young people on social networks now, that have nothing to do, that COULD follow people all day, or decide to unfollow everyone on their list, or just plain mess around on their account all day. How could instagram possibly police everything like that without degrading the user experience?
I understand that they may not care much, but now that the limitations are changing again, I do not believe it had anything to do with spammers necessarily. They also recently have upgraded the software, and not long ago I was experiencing server issues when trying to post manually from the app on my phone.
The guy that said things would be back to normal seems to have some merit.
