helo old member BHW, what difference between Google XML Sitemaps and
Dagon Design Sitemap Generator?

I haven't tried Dagon Sitemap, but Google XML Sitemap is super popular, too bad lately they've been having problems and cause too much memory usage of the hosting plan.

I would like to see what others think about these because I might need an alternative to google xml sitemap.

They create two different kinds of sitemaps.

The Google XML Site Map creates a Site Map that is designed to help search engines find and crawl your site. Here is a description from Wordpress explaining the benefits:

This plugin will generate a special XML sitemap which will help search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo and Ask.com to better index your blog. With such a sitemap, it's much easier for the crawlers to see the complete structure of your site and retrieve it more efficiently. The plugin supports all kinds of WordPress generated pages as well as custom URLs. Additionally it notifies all major search engines every time you create a post about the new content.

Just in case anyone needs it here is the link to get the plugin

The sitemap created by Dagon is a "table of contents" for your viewers which list all of the pages, categories and post on your site. This gives your site extra credibility with the search engines and also makes your site user friendly for your visitors.

Who's your host? I haven't had any problems with them, and I run them on about 100 sites right now (i think..keep loosing track), some of which are reasonably big, and I haven't had any problems. Have you tried just manually building an xml sitemap and storing it on your server?

if your running an autoblog that is constantly posting and hos got quite large, you may be having problems with google xml sitemaps constantly rebuilding the huge sitemap over and over again.

it might be an idea to not sitemap older posts or certain categories to speed it up? or alternatively set it to only rebuild when you ask it to and then login once or twice a week to update it.
