You should also test to see how well your sites perform as well as validate Mite keynotes Free edition is possibly one of the most stringent testers I have come across they have 100s devices to compare how well you site will work on say an iPhone, blackberry or android... Better still it's free...

End of the day though you can't beat testing your sites on a real handset!

My recommendation is have an android for your main phone ie samsung galaxy, get an itouch, and get yourself a blackberry pay as you go... They where selling the 8550 for like $65 the other day! You don't need a contract either since it uses wifi... But I have seen a lot of differences between the way the blackberry renders mobile sites and the way your iPhone or droid renders code

Also remember a lot of emulators won't pick up screen size or user agent detection that's used for switching between regular desktop sites and mobile sites - hence my above comments

Thanks ukescuba for the info. You seem to be all up in the mobile game. I'm just starting out and was wondering if $500 is too high. I'd throw in a qr code, and 5 pages. I figure $100 a page.If I like then $75 lol.

i normally do $250 to $350 site + extra $100 for qr code tracking service for a year but can knock these out in no time at all

if the site isn't a cookie cutter site and is totally unique in its design than i charge upwards of $500 - i've charged over $2000 a couple of times for very custom mobile sites

if you can get $500 go for it!

uke, are you hand-coding your sites or using a special tool for mobile site creation? I really want to get into this market but it's hard to know which tool is best, and most of them charge a chunk of change. Really want to know if something works well before up front. Or better yet, find a free tool :)

Mix right now of hand coding and using my own mobile framework for wordpress, I don't like the majority of mobile plugins for wordpress as they don't output proper business mobile sites, there are a few good mobile template sites but for the most part I would rather have full control over the code as rarely do any of the templates or auto generated sites validate well or are truly light weight - hope that makes sense

I have been using local biz listings like Manta etc. I then visit the site on my mobile then and if they are mobile unfriendly, I just build a mobile version of their site and email them a letter. It is working pretty well as I have just started and have landed 4 clients . I could do more but I'm finding out the truth that many business owners are not very savvy when it comes to mobile. Reaction varies. I had one guy who told me that mobile is not likely to catch on so he's going to wait (to go out of business more likely). Like I said, I have some pretty backward thinking business owners in the area that I live in so if you live in a fairly large metro (where people don't think you're a 'hoveround power chair' sales person when you call and mention 'mobile') you should do okay.

If you want to use a good online mobile emulator, I found one that's better than the run of the mill I've seen most sites using and. It lets you emulate 5 phones Blackberry, Nokia, Samsung, Android and iPhone. The cool thing about it is you can pop back and forth between phone types without ever leaving the page. I found it on a site that I stumbled on by accident so I grabbed the code and adapted it for my own use. PM me for details.
