If Reddit requires ID verification, how bad will things get.

If you all have not heard,

Reddit's CEO said he is thinking of making ID verification a requirement. This could happen at any given day/moment.

I'd think more of a 2027 plan but who knows, the way Ai and filters have WRECKED SMM panels in the last 60 days.

So my question is,

How badly will it affect the platform?

My thoughts on aftershocks would be:
  1. How many users will be lost? Especially in developing countries.
  2. Will it be better for rational marketers who aren't doing 'anything' for a fast buck on Reddit or kill us all?
  3. Is this useless, as people can just start selling ID-verified accounts, but will create a million-dollar opportunity for account sellers suddenly?

I want to hear everyone's thoughts.

I think the number of users will decrease significantly. Because one user currently owns a large number of PVA accounts.

I think millions of users will quit because they dont even want to do that or just dont have the tech for a clear photo

A huge number of people will simply leave Reddit because they just don't want to deal with it

They will filter out legitimate users, but will lose quite a few PVA accounts that are building content. That's the trade-off.

We have quite a few platforms where we can generate free traffic. They are not the only options.

They will never do it, just a buzz word and aura farming :D they would kill their platform and they know it.

The way to do it is to do what TrustPilot does. ID verification is optional but it gives you more perks and verifies your account. Ones that aren't verified are more prone to less engagement and potential shadowbans.

Do you think this could also open the opportunity for a new social media platform to compete?

That will be a terrible move for them, trust me.

facebook requires it, and the site is mostly AI/bots the real users are mostly gone.

This is a good comparison.

I stopped using Facebook some years back when they tightened security. They disabled my account, never provided a specific reason why and it took 4+ months to get it fixed. All my FB pages I had were deleted and some facebook groups I was admin of were transferred to new users.

At that point I stopped using Facebook completely because what is the point of using a site if this could happen again and all my efforts were lost.

If Reddit follows the same path, yes, they'll lose a good % of their base as well.

ID is already requried in many countries for adult content, surely this is already having a big effect

They're under pressure to prove the traffic isn't mostly bots.

If they do ID verification, there will be lots of users protesting it and a lot that abandon the site since it relies on throwaway accounts for many subreddits.

They'll end up walking it back like discord was forced to a couple months ago.

Im on my 10th permanent reddit ban, I love shitposting.
There is no way I would be using reddit if I'd have to show my ID.

They would end up like Tumblr. People will leave in droves. If there was ever a Reddit clone for people to run to, now is the time to build it.

How easy will it be to procure verification for each account? It'll be difficult.

I also think it's a stupid idea to force people to verify their account on Reddit.
