For my main keyword, does that I mean I have been penalized somehow by google?

Give us more info. It could mean you haven't been backlinking and your competitors are starting to build links.

I was rank 8 for some time then I slowly started to drop to 21. I have been building backlinks during the whole process.

What about content? You've got crappy content that isn't unique, panda has been known to come down hard on you.
Have you been updating content often?

If it was new domain those are sometimes ranking higher in the begin and then fall down to it's "right" position. I have seen this behaviour with most of my domains in the first month.

I have about 30 articles, and all target a keyword. I wrote them all myself.
