For as long as i can remember the key to good serp's is all about back links from decent sites.
Over the last 12 months this seems to have changed? some people beleive that while backlinks are still important they are not the main factor now?

So ... what do we all beleive is the key factor in good seo and serp's?

Do you still beleive that backlinks are they way forward? if not, what do you think is?

Please dont just say 'social media' but give a little more info as social media is a big area?
    Maybe domain age? dmoz?

Lets discuss ... Free house in the country to the best poster ;)

    Hi my friend,
Backlinks are still Valuable for SEO and will always be.

But it's not all about Backlinks it is about the way you optimize your site.

ON SEO is very important even if you think it's not.
    Content most valuable.
Backlinks very valuable for Search Engines but try to get Quality Backlinks.

    Better Quality than Quantity.

    My 2 cents:

    1. Exact match domain names will be less powerful in the future.
    2. Blog, profile, spammy backlink power will continue to decrease.
    3. Article Marketing backlinks will stay constant, possibly be more powerful.
    4. Social media backlink power will increase as it has been

    Kinda just some basics...

Getting good results in the search engines is an overall effort. No one thing will work these days.

Thing I have found that increase serps:

    1. Domain name keywords - I had a site that stayed stuck at the # 2 position for the main keyword because it didn't have an exact match domain. I know this because I switched all my backlinks, content, and the other few things I had been doing to this new domain.

A couple weeks went buy and I got the number one spot. Hmmmmm

    2. Anchor text backlinks - These will promise you a bump because they increase relevance to your main site for that keyword. The content around the link doesn't matter much but if you have a lot of anchor text backlinks this gives your site some very good link juice that has given me proven results with just 5-10 pointing my back to my site and then I ping where they originate for faster results.

Of course the number you will need for each keyword varies but if you use an anchor text backlink checker for the site your competing in the search engines against it will give you a good starting point.

And where you get your anchor text backlinks will matter also. Try a lot of different article sites and web 2.0 properties with content links.

    3. Social Marketing - Although I am very against facebook and twitter for how much they have zombified human beings with their addictive platforms this is a very powerful tool to show google and the other search engines how much people are interacting and linking to your site.

I have heard many bigwigs in the IM biz talking about how the way people use and interact with your websites content can have an effect on your rankings. Correct me if I am wrong but this is googles new algo called caffeine.

This means comments, likes, bookmarks, profile backlinks, and what not.

    4. Time - I also noticed that how fast you get your backlinks can hinder your results. Although I have never been the spammy type I am sure that if I get 100 backlinks to my site in one hour that the search engines will factor that into their ranking pattern but this all depends on your sites track record.

I usually spread my links out in different amounts depending on the competition but I like to keep it at 15-30 per site each week with some pointing at keyword specific sub pages to passively help those climb up in the results.

Site age and link age also has a big effect when it comes to the juice you get. The longer your site stays registered plays a factor and how long a link has been pointing to your site. So what you do now will just keep slightly snowballing in the future.

    5. Combine and conquer - Remember, no one thing will work forever so vary your methods and try new things then scale them up until your happy with the results.

Some niches take hard work and others are a breeze so the amount of things you can do to rank for a keyword will depend on what your competition is doing and then you use the data you compile to come up with an action plan to systematically make yourself #1.

I am not a guru or a super affiliate but this is stuff that works for me and it's just my opinion and I hope it helps. Just don't spam your links to non relevant sources and the results will be worth the little extra work you have to do.

I don't focus on backlinks. I focus on content and hot trendy keywords. Keep adding content to your site. It worked for me.

There are two ways but imo backlinks are most important. You don't have to update your content, just keep adding backlinks, and you will get high ranks in G.

traffic, in future google will pay more attention on traffic, in which way, in google analytics way, for how long visitors stay on your site gives google feedback how relevant is your content for a search term, what is the quality of your articles/site... how many visitors, for how long, where from, what was they looking for, did they found it...that's the reason to always go for quality and forget about quantity.

about creating backlinks, you need to be continuous and spontaneous, do it every day a bit, every few days more, sometimes a lot, never pass a day without even few backlinks, that is natural, the way google likes the most, and always will. no rush, that's my 2 cents, whatever you do, do it nice, slowly and gently, do it black hat, but with style.
