Hello,

I'm working on my copywriting and I was curious if anyone has seen any success in demeaning those who don't purchase their product. "Lazy people don't deserve this product and should move right along." "If you don't succeed in XXXX it means you're dumb, slow, etc." "It would take a true idiot to screw this method up.", and so forth.

Just curious if anyone uses this tactic with success.

Kelly Felix (a.k.a. "The Rich Jerk") made millions from telling
people how dumb they were and how rich he was. But he did
it in a strategic, "tongue-in-cheek" manner. You need to be
very adept when you use that kind of humor - otherwise
it can and will backfire on you.

Cheers! - "Wiz"

Thank you all for the input. Maybe I'll be more comical in my approach. Less abrasive jerk and more playful brother.

Seller: Hey asshole
Buyer: Yes sir?
Seller: Your a dumb ass idiot!
Buyer: Thanks! :)
Seller: Hey you stupid shit, why don't you buy this? Or is your lazy ass too broke?
Buyer: Sir I respect you. Heres all the money I have. And here's my debit cards
Seller: You must be retarded.....
Buyer: Thank you sir... Aww shucks, here's a blank check too :)
Seller: Thanks you stupid smelly shit

sales copy should be tested and tested and tested again. have different variation of your copy and test which gives the highest conversion

there was a thread awhile back where some seo consultant boasted about treating his clients like s**t and how they respected him more. Most people didn't agree w/ that tactic.

Some people (like that consultant) mistake cockiness for confidence.

Like mister Wiz said,

you need to be very skilled in psychology and understand what the reader will be thinking when using those mind games.

I.e

You can say, "Only People that are smarter than a 12 year old need Apply"... or.... "Do not read this if you are dumber than a 12 year old" that would get the person reading it to say to them selves... well I am smarter than a 12 year old let me see what this is about.

But if you said, "You are dumber than a 12 year old if you do Not Read this" ... that could back fire coz now you are on the board of insulting them straight out...

Its a tough one really...

I never really use those types of sales tactics, but if you do know how to you use those tactics, then go for it coz it will make you money.

TL;DR

It does work if you know what you are doing.

As per my understanding you need a leg up the ladder as a first priority and oh yea this is important too if you kick people on the way up they will wait for you to fall and kick you harder on the way down!

As for disparaging clients my view is simple you take care of them first - last and always!

Demeaning folks is taboo for me but hey go ahead anyone who has a desire to be called an IDIOT at a later date - UP2U!

Oh by the way hope by chance you demean one of my customers that will be great new business and more orders for me :)

you need to do the exact opposite of that. if you ascribe the qualities of "lazy, dumb, slow, idiotic, etc" to people that don't buy your product, and those happen to actually be accurate descriptions of the people you're marketing to, then they'll naturally conclude that because they fit that description, they shouldn't buy your product.

instead, you're better off saying that your product is specifically designed for people that fit those attributes, but do it in a way that's not directly insulting. a classic way of doing this, if you're taking the guru route, is to simply ascribe those qualities to yourself, as you make your sales pitch for how your product changed your life.

think about how many ridiculous sales pages start off with something like "Who else wants to know how this lazy broke moron made $1,945,036.82 in 3 hours with just one simple trick?". the audience concludes that "this guy's just like me, and if this wanker could could it, then so can i", and then they buy your shit.

The bigger the asshole and the cockier you want to be, the more you have to be able to back it up.

Look at the Rich Jerk as a prime example. He had one of the best sales pages ever written because he was a straight up ass. However, he had the proof on his page to back it up. I don't like Kelly Felix and Mike Long's product they produce but I subscribe to every e-mail they offer because they're good marketers and good writers.

I wouldn't word it the way you plan on wording it though: "It means you're dumb, slow, stupid"

I would go with more along the lines of something like: "It would take someone completely incapable of following basic instructions not to (succeed/make money) with my system."

Something along those lines. There's really a difference between being cocky and just plain up name calling.

Interesting thread and nice contributions, like the ones connected to psychology. Here is my question. How come the neg is so effective in dating when its not working in business? I tried in both and it only works in dating. Negging on the phone thou (worked parttime during studies) worked often. Ofc not ripping the prospect a new one, but small subtle hints. IRL the bodylanguage will exposure u and it wont work, I think. Just my 2 cents.

It work, but be sure that you'll probably mange to sell to those who are actually retarded, which means you are aiming to about 70% of all people.
