I am learning Ruby myself right now and have not seen many threads on BHW on it. If anyone needs help, just message me or post here.

Why not just go straight to Java? Its the most popular language right now and for good reason.

That 's just your opinion. The guy is offering his help about Ruby, why would you want to start a holy war on programming languages instead?

Not my opinion, Java is the most commonly used programming language. Because no one is going to come to this guy for help, he cannot possibly compete with the amount of resources on the internet.

a) As I said, it 's just your opinion (and I 'll add it 's an uniformed one): http://www.langpop.com/

b) You don't know if it 's going to be helpful or not, and at the very list, he 's offering he 's time; and he had no obligation to. And your response to that is to tell him to use Java? Here 's an idea, you can offer Java support for free if you think his offer is sub par to your standards.

Really? Your using stats from 2011 to tell me that my opinion is uninformed?

Oh really?

Data freshness isn't quite a deterministic factor when you count the wrong things. If you bother reading how tiobe determines its ranking table, it will be obvious to you (hopefully...) that tiobe 's ranking methodology is nonsensical at best.

lol, this is what you get for trying to be helpful now..

And the rest?

And the rest?

What rest?

In Link #2 they just plug the terms into google trends ffs!

The raw data comes from Google Trends

Link #3 is a $10 article and #4 a $30 infographic.

Rule #1 about statistics. Always check the data & methodology.

I love statistics. Btw, did you know that water is the main reason behind car accidents? 95% of drivers involved had consumed it up to 3 hours before. :D

Water is also the sole cause of death, everyone that has consumed it has died or will die.

Exactly, that 's why you should take statistics with a huge grain of salt before reading the methodology and investigating the data sources.

Can't go by what's the most popular language. In the web development world, practically no one uses Java. Java is intended for enterprise systems, legacy server software, and Android applications. If you're looking to build web applications, web crawlers, auto-posters, and other blackhat tools, Ruby by a mile is a way better fit. Practically no one uses Ruby on these forums because the barrier of entry is quite high. Even though Ruby is actually an easier language to understand over PHP, deployment is one of Ruby's weakpoints.
