As above really, how can you tell is its a scan or not?

I do look for the following so far:
  1. Website age
  2. Identifying if traffic is on the up or down
  3. Checking costs vs sales
  4. Why the owner is selling
  5. Hy the sudden (if there is) drop in traffic
Anything else to look for?

Common sense.
Link profile
If organic traffic check rankings and keyword ms

See the type of links they have of the site is spammed with low tier trash odds are that it will get slapped eventually

Many thanks for clearing that up for me but...I have one last question to your reply promise!! What do you mean by 'links that the site has been spammed with low tier trash? How do I identify that?

For me any profiles, forum profiles, guestbook links, non-relevant comment links with high OBL is considered spam.

I was once scanned on flipper the seller would not respond to my messages after I've paid him but if you pay over PayPal you can report to the transaction and PayPal will refund your money
