Identifying bad backlinks.

The bad backlinks are easy to spot out; they're usually the ones doing drugs and impregnating girls who are under the age of consent. On a serious note, I use tools such as Majestic SEO and Webmaster Tools to find backlinks on my website, and then I look for any links that look like spam. Luckily for me, I don't have any bad backlinks pointing to my website.

You can try using MonitorBacklinks.com, although I cannot say anything bad or good about them since I've never used their service.

First you need to collect all your site back links by using tools like Google webmaster tool, Majestic SEO ..etc. Then identify dead links and BAD links . Yes, Both dead links and Bad links will definitely affect drop your ranking down. Check whether the links are still alive, links from spammy sites, links from irrelevant sites, links from untrustworthy sites etc..

I wouldn't rely on softwares to autodetect and label links as BAD and for you to disavow them just by listening to the softwares. They help a lot in showing you metrics or telling you possible problems, but I suggest you review each link manually and look at all the metrics to make a decision.
Like Zwielicht suggested, you can try Monitor Backlinks to give you all the backlinks metrics.

Hey Joe,
If you have webmaster access you can download link from webmaster tools, then analyze links .If the link is irrelevant to your niche and from a spammy website that's links are bad links.

Yes, this is exactly the way to go (and the only way I'd seriously recommend). It helps a great deal with spotting the most dangerous links, so you can start detoxing straight away. Helped us with a client to prevent from a penalty within just a few days.
