Hi ... I just launched a directory focusing on entertainment site listings. I also have a "General" category for non-entertainment listings. For the next two months, I'm offering free "Regular" listings and deep discount on "Feature" listings. To promote the directory, I'm doing the usual submissions and so forth.

Am hoping to get a different take, from BHW users, on promoting a directory. My goal is long term, not to sell in two or three months.

I'm not promoting new listings, with this thread, only looking for ideas to make the directory a success. Still, seeing the site may help generate ideas. Click here for the site, if you're interested. Anyone and everyone, of course, is welcome to add a listing or 50 :):):)

    Thanks.

    maybe this will help?

make sure to crawl your site regularly and build a Google sitemap.xml file for it. then register and verify the site and site map using Google's webmaster tools account.

do your keyword research homework...once you know what keywords you are going after, make sure to...take care of on-site SEO (proper Title tags, descriptions, H1 tags, cross linking pages with kwd anchor text, and SEO friendly URLS)

build backlinks for deep (specific listings) URLs using appropriate keywords/phrases as anchor text. lots of good services here on BHW to help you do this.

for offline advertising, you could try a targeted postcard mailer (vistaprint.com) or classified ads (nationwideclassifieds.com) just pick your locations and target audience carefully.

hope this give you some ideas.

Very well put, offline advertising can really work wonders for a dictionary listing. Sadly your not in a market that can attract many businesses however there are still a few (You could still go to all businesses for the general/other section of the site.)

However offline advertising could be the way forward. I suggest newspapers personally (does not have to be locally you can still advertise cheaply in other towns/county's newspapers).
