Ideal Link Building Limit?

1. Google always looks for Quality over quantity after its RankBrain algorithm change.
2. Don’t start one day building 100 backlinks by buying cheap links on fiverr!
3. These links would only harm your site!
4. Always do your research for the links built to your competitor websites on tools like ahrefs and semrush.
5. Build similar links like your competitors.
6. Look on ubersuggest for keywords you want to rank for and look at the first google search result and number of links to it.
7. You would either need those many links as per ubersuggest link number of more.
8. A DA (Domain Authority - Moz ranking factor) of 89 do follow backlink is almost equal to 10 links of DA 10 to your websites.
9. If you build bulk links you cannot have a control over what is the spam score of the sites to which you’ll request the link from.
10. Any website with spam score more than 33% will hurt your ranking and if it increases, google will penalize your site and remove from the listings!

If your site is new and has no backlinks yet I would start off with a few per month (like 3-4 or so, depending on the links) and increase gradually by 50-100% more links as months go by.
And if your site is aged and / or already has backlinks you make an average of the total backlinks over the period of time that your site has existed and you build links around that average.

These being said, you still need to use common sense, like for example if your site is new and you're running PPC / PR / social media promotion for 1 month you will most likely acquire backlinks (references) naturally due to your promotion, and those references could amount to 100s, and that's perfectly fine. You know uncle Ben's words "with great promotions come great rewards"... or something....

And if you're not promoting your site anywhere and your site is new and you're getting 100s of links in a week be sure that you're gonna get penalized somehow (sandboxed most likely)

See any backlinks building strategy should start with a gradual way! Simply because, Any human after their sleep, can never stand without sitting first. If you can do that, then there’s something wrong with that person!
