I'd like to build a bookmarking/dump site

I've seen some bookmarking sites that have ******** links and still having good PR.
What they do is to tag nofollow to the unnecessary links like for the comments link, edit profile link, submit link, vote link, etc.

For the case of PHPDug based site take a look at oopza.com, for over a year it has a stagnant PR3, and after applying the nofollow to the links above it's crawling up to PR4 now.

well, even a wordpress blog have nofollow to the unnecessary links, but with thousands of ******** out links... there should be a trick or something :)

Hmm.. PHPDug sites are by default have ******** links and currently very few apply nofollow to unnecessary links.

It's proven to be effective for the case of oopza, as I said it is PR4 now after applying nofollow.
And before the last PR update, oopza was spreading links like crazy on other sb sites.

Can't figure out other ways yet, but if you want to trick the users to think that your links are ******** while actually they're using out/redirect script or generate the links using javascript,
you can keep all the PR juices for yourself - bad idea though

just noticed, "interesting" link you have there in your sig :D

Just curious, if you don't mind telling me what platform are you planning to use for the site?

i didn't chose the platform yet, i would like to give ******** links, but i need to know how they grow so big giving out so many links :)

I didn't expect PHPDug sites can reach high PR, mostly around PR3, but some really are, check out the following:
pageactive.org
adusum.org

Both are PR5, perhaps can be useful for your reference.

The reason a lot of them grow so big is "because" they give out ******** links, it's a slight promotional trick to get people interested, using the service, generating content and linking back to it. Once the site gets a bit viral and starts to grow on it's own, you nofollow say comments, then a few months later nofollow submissions. By this time the site has a regular user base, who won't leave because of the change.

The biggest challenge is cleaning up blatant "Buy Viagra" spam which devalues the site while still giving link juice to those generating real content.

Many of the big social sites have used this exact model. Slap on a slick design, call it the next big Web 2.0 site and you are golden.

You're right sweetfunny, most case I found for the ******** change to nofollow are in pligg based sites,
some would use out script trick to make the contributors think that the links are still ********.

For the "Buy Viagra" submissions, scuttle sites are beginning to get smarter with this.
They can parse the url, title, description, and tags to find "unwanted words" and deny the submissions.

I don't have social bookmarking sites so I don't know how they do it, guess the platforms vendors giving away addon for this.

I spammed on .fr sb site before and guess they used language filter for the submissions - no language but french should be in the submissions.

I know the three PHP Dug sites I own have PR 3 and PR 2 and have had no problems with lost PR due to the do-follow links out from them (even with those bad viagra, pharmacy, and other bad links).

They are nice set and forget sites that happily give me a link back to any new site I create without fear of it being deleted (since I am a nice guy... lol).

Definitely an easy way to create an automatic linking machine (think automatic RSS feed postings to the sites to your money sites - deeplinking on autopilot).

Wow, how long have you got the sites?

Do you apply the submissions filter? That is if the filter exists.

I also notice some PHPDug SB sites owners put a trick on the sites so that only their links should be on the front page, make vote function useless.
And some Scuttle sites force their links to always appear in our links collection.
