Torrents are peer to peer sharing of copyrighted material you'd have to pay for otherwise. Movies, music, ebooks, software. It's not legal even though every other person online does it. The knock on the door or warning of infringement could come from sony, microsoft or whoever owns whats "shared". Actually they will probably send the Feds or lawyers on their behalf.

I've always used Bitcomet and download most of the time from Demonoid. However, mid last year I was downloading from Vuze and got a copyright infringement from my provider more than once. After I stopped using Vuze i didn't get anymore.

So if somebody shares their wifi with a wide range of people (access point), and some of those people decide to download illegal/stolen content, could the person hosting the access point get slammed?
How about if somebody hacks someone else's password encrypted wifi connection and downloads illegal/stolen content using the victims internet connection?

Yep you can definitely get in serious shit for it.
There have been people sued for millions of dollars by the RIAA for open wifi shit and there was a case here in NZ a while ago where someone got in deep shit for CP via their wireless. You may or may not end up getting off, but it there's a high probability of being sued, having your PCs seized and gone through with a fine tooth comb, or spending a huge amount in legal fees.
Be careful with your wireless!

In australia, most isp companies don't forward complaints to their clients, they go straight into trash. Maybe using an isp with dynamic ips (and changing ip every so often) would be safer than static.
