Hello everyone,

I recently decided to change my career path and leave the consulting firm I created with my previous partner.

We were working on innovation – designing and launching new digital products for our clients (mobile apps, SaaS, etc.), and training them to be innovators.

Frankly, I hated the job. It was 99% talking and 1% doing. I like to do stuff. I like to create things, especially when design is involved. So I though that maybe being a web designer and developer would fit more my psychology.

So here I am, launching my web agency, working on brand design (my deepest passion) and web design&development.

I feel a little lost, since I don't know where to start.

I've been reading on BHW for months now, trying to understand what to do, but frankly I'm more confused than the day I started.

My question for you is: If you were in my shoes, where would you start?

Create an account on Fiverr, Upwork, Freelancer, Toptal, and post a gig? List my services on BHW marketplace?

Thanks a lot, and wish me luck!

A good place for developers would be Turing.com aside from Upwork and Freelancer, it's a jungle out there.

Also, create personal projects that you can show to potential clients.

You said you like to create stuffs, you will do this a lot when you are the Junior Developer level. But as you climb up the ladder, when you reach the Senior level, you will still code, but often times you will be talking to your boss with a lot of things like product specifications, infrastructure, etc.

Good luck on your journey.

Thanks a lot for your suggestions. Anyway, I plan on keeping it a one-man show. I'm not interested in hiring, nor being hired by anyone. I just want to be a freelancer building stuff.

I got my start on Fiverr. That is good just to figure out what people want, and get a feel for working with clients. Then go and do your own thing, start your own project and build your portfolio.

Learn about HTML, CSS, Javascript (a little bit of Object Oriented Programming is needed) and if you have time get interested into the backend (apache/nginx - cgi)

Thanks, but I already know that stuff :) My question was more market-oriented: where do I find clients?

Too much competition on Fiverr and Upwork
The best way to get started would be to reach out to clients directly via email

How to get your first clients?. Maybe applying reverse enfineering. Join fb groups of people needing web design, probably like ecommerce groups. Post your work there but do it with strategy. You get the idea.

It's a race to the bottom unless you are incredibly talented. So you should focus on being as skilled as possible and offering a service that is way superior to the average.
