What is your guys take on internet marketing? Do you consider it a career, or just a job on the side? I know there is big money that can be made, but on average is it difficult to make money off internet marketing? What did you make when you began and what do you make on average now and how long did it take?

u need ideas like in any other business reading will help understand how it works and what u can do, but wont give u any magical formula
 
For me having a traditional business background offline was a superior foundation for internet marketing. No one who is making substantial income online is average in what they do. These are individuals who are above average in their techniques and the way they approach business.

I think IM is hard only if you are looking for push button solutions to quick money which is very prevalent and unrealistic. People who believe this is profitable / career level IM have it all wrong and will always confront failure and frustration.

IM is a professional marketers paradise.
 
Full time career for me. I started way back before Al Gore even invented the Internet. Started out making money on BBSs.

Its a hobby/side job for me at the moment, but hopefully it will be full time soon.

LOL, sounds familiar, me too, before Al Gore invented the internet. ;-) Made my first
$ online within an AOL BBS when AOL was king. Easiest and fastest money I've
made to this day.
 
IM is a tool, albeit a powerful one, but it's not a goal unto itself.

Oh how I miss those days when AOL was king. Remember Yahoo Classifieds? The money I also made on there was amazing.
 
Side job for now, started with PPD 1 and half month ago, and I learned and progressed fast, I'm researching about CPA and would like to go white hat in the future for moral reasons.

Full time for me. It kept me in average, middle class. I raised my kids as a single mother with it-paid a mortgage, put food on the table, etc. Just average middle class America type stuff. I have been working for myself for 23 years, had an online store for 12 years. Well actually more than one, but they were all in jewelry. I just changed my niche and am having fun with it. Never did I think I would change my niche because jewelry was my life for so long. I still have the store and it still gets sales, but I am concentrating on this new niche right now. It is going very well. The best advice I got was from someone on bhw. He said you can't make millions if you don't hire out. I knew that, but I needed to hear it and really think hard about it. I hire out more now which is great because it enables me to have a lot of things going on at the same time.

Black hat doesn't mean being immoral. I am black hat, and there is nothing immoral about my jewelry store. What's disgusting is that there are millions of people like me who have to fight tooth and nail to compete with corporations and chain stores that stomp on us in every way possible. I have been knocked out of the serps and found millions of porn links associated with my site, had a chain copy my designs, been screwed over by Amazon when my jewelry was there and also after I left. Amazon also uses my store name in the heading and description of one of their google ads. It is not immoral to use black hat programs or methods to boost your serps.

Yep remember those Yahoo classifieds ;-) I was killing it within the AOL newsgroups
Business section. I distributed an offline product to an online distribution source in a foreign export market and was very enriched for a long time because Al Gore created the internet! lol Happy Days as an export management consultant.

Also did very well emailing directly to Prodigy, AOL, Compuserve, and Juno accounts. ;-) Inboxing targeted emails was a snap back then with the right tools, just as it is today.

Competitive forces and market conditions are more mature now, but the net as a platform for profit remains a professional marketers paradise. Lots of opportunity everywhere.

Success requires a well thought out and well executed plan.

To the OP, IM can very well be organized as a borderless, above average income earning... full time career.

Oh my goodness, I forgot about that! Remember the email lists with millions of AOL, compuserve, earthlink, and prodigy addresses on them? It was amazing how many people responded.
 
I agree with ShadeDream. It is a great way to start off into the business world. As for me I am doing it on the side. I have a part time job and I am a college student so I can only do it part time now. I think the best way to start out is have a job and do IM on the side. If you are making good money then you can do it full time.

Yep, and those email list were everywhere! Definitely responsive. I used to run email
campaigns inboxing AOL, Compuserve, Juno, Genie, and a boat load of local isps, and people would actually print out the credit card order form and confirm their order with full credit card data and Fax it to me. I used to run an FOD server to distribute additional info to inbound leads. Try doing that now. lol.

I'd leave for school in the morning, and return to my bedroom late afternoon, the first place I'd look was my fax machine tray for incoming orders. ;-)

Today if you want more info you'll find it on Video or PDF. And if you want to pay, there's PayPal etc. The evolution of Internet Marketing is great to experience.

Back then you could even make good $ with straight out targeted Fax Spam! ;-)

IM is the ultimate flick. (risky, full of action and thriller and you can even find romance)
