I Thought Google Doesn't Use Meta Tags?

Hi, Just to keep this short, If you do not use any description meta tags on a page then Google will default to using the first 150-180 characters found on that page. So it's not that Google don't more a question of if you don't then Big G will....... Anyway I'm happy for you that you are getting some action

Not going to negrep anyone but surely, of course those descriptions mean something. Otherwise Google would not bother adding them to the search, or would they?

When I'm doing on-page SEO, they are very important...In fact, I spy on the competition to see what they've written. If that is not important, I don't know what is.

They do, they describe to the user of the SE what the website is about, that does not mean that it neccessarily has any direct effect on the ranking. Not all Google does is to benefit the webpages, their users are actually people who search for content and can benefit from knowing if their search results are relevant to their query.
