Wordpress is built on php. Some people will tell you that it is enough, but they are the ones who get hacked and cry around. So, the answer is NO. If you are serious about doing it yourself, learn PHP (at-least the ins and the outs). If you think I am not qualified to say this, keep believing it until you get hacked too.

Amazon itself looks like a piece of web 1.0 crap, but, believe me, every fricking pixel in their UI is tracked and optimized to maximize profit. Your vision might be obscured by your personal attitude. Do not let this! Let the data drive your conclusions. Ask your management for A/B test for a limited set of products, or be in charge of one single product and demonstrate how you can boost its sales. Most probably you will fail as successful business is successful because of a reason, but you have a chance to show yourself.
