How are you guys able to focus on doing your work while listening to music in the background?

It seems that most of the times in order for me to focus I need to sit in silence otherwise I can't fully concentrate and need to read over things a few times.

I've heard one or two tracks where I would be able to still do my work but most of the time music simply distracts me.

You should listen to trance without lyrics(Just music). That would help in focusing better. Avoid listening to Gangnam style while working.. lol

I listen to Rain, on RainyMood.com and sometime play Jazz in the background. You need something without lyrics that won't distract you, but something calming. To each their own though.

I can't work without music, as above I'm often listening to http://trance.fm radio station. Try some relaxing classical.

I don't know, music seems to distract me, or change my mood, and I get excited to do something else rather than to work.

I've tried some Jazz before and it worked for a while but not so much now, I'll try some trance and see how that goes.

As a matter of fact I can't seem to focus music or not. lol

Very true man. I have the same thing when listening to music with lyrics. I start to focus on it and then my mind wanders off. I usually type in: "Concentration music for studying" In youtube, and that works perfectly for me. No lyrics, but for some reason it makes me focus intensely.

Complete quieteness is not for me either, because then I get distracted by any other sound I hear lol..

With me I get distracted by the beats and the rhythms in the music, even if it's without lyrics. My mind just wanders off into the unknown, I seem to focus on the actual beat and what's going on within the song. I like trance and I tried to focus to it earlier but it didn't really do it for me, at least not yet. It's probably a matter of finding the right track or getting used to it?

So far so good, it took a while but it seemed to calm me down and I feel focused now. Had to use headphones though.

After listening to this it seems that I can even focus with some trance in the background.

Will see how it goes. :D

I have ADD, so I can't work on anything without some sort of white noise in the background.

If I have to concentrate then I dont listen to music. If I am working on autopilot then some high bpm inspirohouse gets me buzzing or a bit of dancehall reggae boosts up the workrate.

I listen to Enya , Augustana, The Rocket Summer, Something Corproate, Feeder etc.

Most have lyrics, my productivity is a lot better with music, I enjoy working a lot more (even though I really enjoy without music too).

I have my Pandora station set to the Harry Potter Soundtrack. It's a good mix of not too distracting orchestrated music. Anything with words distracts me too.
